A lot of the first years were people who had connections to RMI outside of just going there for school, which made sense because a lot of people had connections to RMI outside of just going there for school. Drew had lived at RMI practically his whole entire life, and Kit herself had two parents who had gone to RMI, and three relatives on staff. It was three, right? She might be forgetting someone, it was hard to keep track of who was at RMI but the point was that there were a lot of people who knew a lot of people at RMI but the first years especially were like, way connected. It was crazy! But one of those people was Kit’s cousin Sadie, who she didn’t actually know very well.

Sadie was Aunt Cosette’s kid, which would have confused Kit more if Drew wasn’t Jessie’s biological kid and Grandpa Garen’s adopted kid. But they were, so the most confusing part about Sadie was that Aunt Cosette wasn’t married and to Kit’s knowledge, there had never been an Uncle Cosette. But then there was Ruby, and there wasn’t an Uncle Cindra, so maybe it was just her parents who had decided to be married before they got kids.

Despite not knowing Sadie well, and being a little unsure about her because Aunt Cosette didn’t like telling the family all about what was going on all the time, unlike Aunt Cindra, Kit was perfectly fine to see her cousin show up and pick up the Spell-O-Tape roll that Kit had dropped. Maybe Sadie would be the sort of first year who could help make a difference with the other first-years. She was clearly super into helping out.

“Elliot keeps swearing,” Kit explained. “And you know that only grownups are allowed to swear, but he doesn’t listen when I tell him even though I’m a lot older than him, so now there has to be a campaign about it. Myffi even helped me set it up and everything.” Kit was proud of that fact. It meant that she was going in the right direction to be Head Girl herself one day, which would be just the coolest. Rose had been the one who got all that stuff because Rose was like, megasmart and Marissa was a normal smart person, and you didn’t get to be prefect or anything just because you were the best big sister ever. She held out her hand for the Spell-0-Tape. These posters weren’t going to put themselves up!

“Do you want to help?” she asked. “I’ve still got bunches of posters!”
