Would you do whatever I insist?

Of all the students in the school, Rose was one who seemed to frequent the recreation center at similar times to Danny himself, so he often saw her there. He had, by now, schooled himself not to stare at her in her bathing suit, but he wasn’t above admiring the view every so often when he was convinced she wasn’t looking. He didn’t especially want to be caught in the act because he wasn’t sure how well Rose would take it. Danny had always - and still - found Rose intimidating; he didn’t want to be on her bad side. She was a tiny person but could use a wand better than most and he had heard her yell. When she resurfaced and grinned at him, Danny grinned back, being sure to keep his eyes on hers.

“Just chilling out,” he replied. He didn’t want to seem too invested in the exercise because he didn’t respond well to critique. Once in third year he had challenged Rose to a swimming race. She had won, and he hadn’t suggested another competition since, nor recalled the first in conversation. If she so much as commented on the angle of his elbow mid-stroke, he’d be way more devastated than he would let on. “You?”

Despite their friendship, Dardanius was pretty sure that Rose found him irritating. He was always trying to be the center of attention in their group, and he got grades almost as good as hers without putting in half the effort she did, so he probably wouldn’t blame her if she did feel that way. While she seemed to be dedicated to schoolwork, invested in Quidditch, and supportive of her friends, Danny would admit to being lazy about schoolwork, invested in the attention Quidditch secured him, and largely saw his peers as competitors or the subjects of poorly constructed jokes. Just as well they had others in their friendship group because honestly Danny wasn’t sure Rose would still be calling him a friend if they’d been left entirely to their own devices. That would suck, because he liked her a lot.

“Hey have you met the transfer?” he asked, his train of thought halting there after passing through friendship groups, and then the current fifth year as a whole. Rose was in the same house as the new addition to their yeargroup so had more chances of interaction. Danny had seen a couple of new students in the Diner and classes but had yet to interact with them.
