A reasonable cascade of water, considering it was created by a small person, splashed into Danny’s face. He laughed, not being entirely surprised by such a reaction (they were in a pool), and shook his head like a dog, causing his brown hair to stick out at strange angles for a moment before the weight of the water pulled it gradually back down. Her next comment, however, demanded a retort. “I do not preen,” Danny argued, his demeanour still comedic but his denial vehement. “I swear, I put as much effort into looking this amazing as I do into my schoolwork.” Translation: the bare minimum deemed acceptable. “I am clean and my clothes are clean but Merlin curse me if I make any more effort than that,” he promised.

He did like some of his clothes, admittedly - his yellow tee practically glowed, and his dragonhide boots were the best thing he had ever owned - but he didn’t admire himself in them. He wore his hair longer than his mother liked because he didn’t want to look too neat, but he gave no more thought to it each day than it being clean. Honestly Danny thought that he was on the slightly goofy side of okay-looking. Marissa had called him ‘pretty’ before midterm, but it had been a peculiar conversation, so Danny tired not to rely on it. On the flipside, Holland had once told Danny he dressed like a 90's hip-hop backup dancer, but Danny suspected he had been particularly irritating that day so he wasn't sure that counted, either.

He let go of the side again, to which he’d clung when Rose had tried to drown him. He was going to duck out of the rest of the conversation, because he wasn’t sure he wanted Rose to make any further comment on his physical appearance. It had never been much of a consideration for Dardanius. He knew that Holland liked to experiment with physical appearance, and Emmett let Holland experiment on him, but unless there was a special event then Danny didn’t make any sort of effort. Conversely, he had never denied that found Rose physically attractive, and he didn’t think he wanted her to outright claim the opposite opinion about him. Neither could he explain why that was so important to him.

“I’ve only done a few lengths,” he said, pretending like he wasn’t over-thinking their verbal exchange. “Gonna see if I can do a few more before my enthusiasm wears off and my stomach wins out.” Without waiting for her re-engage him in further conversation, Dardanius swam away.

With a laugh, Rose splashed Danny, gliding her right arm through the water at just the right angle to make a fair amount of water shower him. She wasn’t sure that she was better than Danny at... more
