My favorite idea is being creative

“Your makeup is already on point, so I’m not gonna mess with that. If I had the supplies and knew how I’d offer to henna your scalp,” Holland said, completely serious. Kaye could rock the wigless look if she wanted any day—Holland was an unsurprisingly body-positive person—but a mandala pattern would look really cool on the underclasswoman’s head. If she was interested, Holland would absolutely look into that. They were known for going out of their way to do complicated hair-and-makeup things for their friends. Undertaking the multi-hour task that was taming Marissa’s hair was the prime example.

“Busyness depends on the day, but I mostly picked here by process of elimination. Common rooms and the passageways don’t have much foot traffic. I just wanted to work with RMI students, so Pearl Street’s out. People come to the Rec Center when they’re bored and have free time. They usually go to the library to do something specific, work on homework or whatever. Most of them aren’t gonna derail themselves with a makeover.” Well, maybe some of them would. Holland was academically-oriented and didn’t hate studying, but to most people, this was duller than a textbook lecture—two things Holland didn’t dislike.

“Also, there’s a tile floor here, so if I end up cutting hair, it doesn’t make as much of a mess. The cleanup is easier.” The library was part hardwood and part carpet. “Plus Ms. Toladaeri,” or was it Mrs. Bennett? It seemed like most of the married staff members kept their maiden names, though, “would probably have her kneazles run me out of the library if I tried to use hairspray in there. It’s not good for the books.” Holland was known to use charms like impervius to keep their face free of hairspray when they used it (although the fifth-year normally went with mousse), but it would be a lot of work to cast it on all the surrounding shelves regardless of where they set up in the library.

“If hair and makeup are out, I could do your nails,” Holland offered, rifling through their makeup kit and pulling out an emery board and a few bottles of polish. “My mom designs bath products and cosmetics, so she sometimes sends me new products to test. I have this sparkly blue one that is supposed to stay on until you take it off. Like, it won’t chip, and it’ll spread when your nail starts to grow out.”

Kaye already knew that she thought Holland was attractive, but Merlin, they were very cute. The fourth year couldn’t figure out if her interest was purely an aesthetic one or something else. It made... more

      • Kaye couldn’t help but smile wide and laugh at Holland’s suggestion. “Wait, you’d really learn how to do that?” It was clear that the older student was serious. The Aquila thought about it, and then... more
