Maybe I should swim away now

Marissa held back a small sigh. She was super aware that this was up to her; she just needed someone to talk to about it. Rose wasn’t an option right now, and she didn’t know where to find Holland this early in the morning. Really, getting advice from Holland would probably be the best plan, because the Lyra was good at giving logical answers without invalidating people’s feelings. Marissa wanted Danny’s attention, though, so he was the one she sought out.

“I mean, last time we had a conversation, she slapped me,” Marissa pointed out. “I’m not exactly comfortable with the idea of giving her another opportunity.”

It wouldn’t be as bad, probably, if she’d seen it coming. Camilla must have had more going on in her head than just what Marissa accidentally said, because nothing she mentioned was worth getting physically hurt over. She tried to imagine something that might be an okay reason to slap someone. Ruben and Rose seemed to think that retaliation was a perfectly good reason, but Marissa didn’t share that opinion. Even if she did, who knows what Camilla would have done next?!

“I talked to Camilla last night.”

Marissa blinked her green eyes, bringing them back to Danny instead of on the letter she’d read plenty of times. He’d talked to Camilla? A knot of anxiety twisted uncomfortably in her stomach. This entire situation was just embarrassing enough as it was; she didn’t know how to feel about Danny talking to Camilla about it. The dancer just wanted the whole thing to die down and disappear. That didn’t seem like it was going to happen, though, and that was stressful. She didn’t like conflict, especially if it revolved around her. Drama, yes. Conflict? No.

It helped to hear that the Cetus told Danny she was sorry, though. She didn’t want Camilla to feel bad, because it seemed like she was already feeling awful enough without Marissa’s help. That was probably truer than she initially realized, since Danny confirmed the Aquila’s suspicions about Camilla’s feelings for Elijah.

“I guess I understand a little of how she was feeling.” Marissa tried to force herself to focus on the fact that Danny was talking to her, instead of being hyperaware of his hand in hers. Unconsciously (or consciously, it was hard for her to tell), she moved her hand so she could lace her fingers through his. Her heart did that obnoxious, twitterpated jump that it wasn’t supposed to do, but she didn’t silently scold it this time.

“You do?” She asked with a slight grin. It was close to a teasing grin, because before all of this, that’s what she would have done. She would have playfully made fun of him, and they would have gotten a good laugh in before breakfast.

“Look, me and Elijah… it wasn’t – at first it was just for the play. Then you stopped wanting to,” Marissa’s eyes darted down to their hands, then to a spot just next to their hands. She stopped herself from saying that Camilla’s comments were probably spot-on, knowing that that level of self-deprecation wasn’t going to be helpful. “I don’t know. I guess I get it, too. Because that’s how I feel - felt about you and her sometimes.”
