Wait, what? Marissa did like him that way? Danny laughed. He couldn't help it; he'd been assuming this whole time that the stomach-jolting, heart-tingling feelings had been entirely one-sided in their interactions. Holland was right - he was an idiot.

Marissa went on to explain that of course she liked him that way. Dardanius had managed to stop laughing but nothing was going to wipe the grin off his face. Nobody had ever told him that before. Marissa was smiling too, in a completely adorable way that made Danny want to cuddle her all over again, but that was conflicting with the strong urge he had to kiss her right now. As the two desires battled it out, he settled for listening, holding her hand, and grinning from ear to ear. Even as Marissa elaborated on their situation, the Lyra was still smiling.

She was right, of course. Danny did have all these hypotheticals on his mind, which Marissa knew better than anyone, as she was the person he had talked to most about his confusion with kissing, dating, and that whole circus. Yet since his conversation with Camilla regarding the culture that governed them both, Dardanius had begun to harbour some doubts about his future, which prior to then had always been so certain. If those same ideals had prevented Marissa from admitting her feelings for him simply to make his life easier, that further contributed to his confusion. She hadn't said anything because of all he’d told her, yet paradoxically, if they hadn't ever had that conversation then Danny probably would never have kissed her, and they wouldn't be having this conversation, either. If she thought they stood a chance she might have spoken up sooner. If Danny had thought he had a chance with Marissa, he probably would have said something before now. Danny agreed their scenario was problematic. Still he smiled; he couldn't be sad about the girl he liked reciprocating those feelings.

Now Danny had this information, he wasn't sure what to do with it. All he really wanted to do was kiss her, so he leaned in and did just that, touching her lips just briefly with his own. When he pulled back again, some words had formed in his mind, so he let them flow out of his mouth before he’d had time to overthink them.

“I can't imagine not having you as a friend.” That, above all else, troubled him. Maybe they could find a way to overcome his concerns about marriage and his family and all the interconnected concerns that held for him. Maybe he could come to terms with Marissa’s open relationship approach to dating. Maybe she wouldn't get bored over the summer when they wouldn't see each other for weeks together. But that was a lot of maybes.

“I wasn't expecting this.” He was still smiling, but he'd managed to reign in his broad grin to a calmer expression. “I think-” he stared at their hands again, because that seemed easier than looking anywhere else, “I think I'm right that neither of us are looking for anything serious right now?” He paused a little in case she wanted to refute that. “And we tried being casual but, I guess, I can't do that. I find it… overwhelming.” He chanced a glance back at Marissa to try and judge how she might be feeling.
