Every word Marissa uttered made Danny smile yet more broadly - he was actually starting to become aware of the muscles in his cheeks and jaw - and his insides were doing a strange sort of dance that was uncomfortable and enjoyable at the same time. He was listening intently to everything she said, which was easy, because she was saying great things, but also difficult, because he was distracted by how much he still wanted to keep kissing her. That had been the standard for their interactions for at least the past several weeks, however, so he was getting pretty good at overcoming the impulse.

The time of year seemed especially relevant. Danny thought so, and Marissa mentioned how the summer break wasn’t far away. He didn’t want to be Emmett. Well that was generally a fact, but more specifically, he didn’t want Marissa to break up with him over the summer. He didn’t want to put her in a position where she would have to do that. They’d been friends for years, and Danny understood that romance for Marissa was about having fun, gaining new experiences, and getting to know different people, and he he was completely on board with her doing that. He, however, was not comfortable with that approach. It had taken him until this term to be comfortable kissing anyone - and even that had followed from a conversation with Marissa, and an unfortunate talk with Lia and his mother (that one the one hand he tried every living second trying to forget, but on the other hand had allowed him an alternative perspective on what he’d assumed was reality) - but instead of accomplishing unattached liaisons without feelings, here they both were, attracted to each other with entirely incompatible ideals.

“You wouldn’t be the reason it doesn’t work,” Danny shook his head, not at all prepared to deal with how cute Marissa was being right now. He was hardly an expert on relationships, but if he entered into one with Marissa then he couldn’t claim ignorance of her character. He, after all, would be going to parties and other assorted gatherings all summer where he might now be tempted to do more than dance with the girls. He wouldn’t be her friend at all if he tried to discourage Marissa from having her own fun over the summer.

But she would try to make things work for them. If, she said, they decided they wanted to do this. The timing was crucial. “I think… maybe… I would like to try?” Danny tried not to phrase his thoughts as a question but it happened anyway. It was impossibly complicated in his mind at that moment. The most prevalent thought was that Marissa liked him, and they were holding hands, and she would be interested in trying something serious with him one day, maybe. The second most prevalent thought was the conflicting conundrum that he already had a future planned. He wasn’t sure how Marissa fit into that future. Honestly, he wasn’t even sure how he fit into that future anymore. He was starting to realise that his society caused very real problems for some people. He wasn’t sure he wanted to be part of that problem, but he wasn’t sure he actually had any real choice in the matter. He used his free hand to rub his neck distractedly.

“Not now,” Danny said, because that was another of the more dominant ideas in his thought-spiral, and it surfaced before he’d had time to hone it. “I mean, I would, now. I very much would now.” He wasn’t even saying words in a way that made sense anymore. He laughed a little again because this whole episode was surreal and unexpected, yet fun, even while mildly disappointing. “I feel like the summer break isn’t a good time to start trying to be serious,” he said aloud what he thought she had already hinted. “I could try being more casual,” he offered. “It’s a learning curve for me, too.”
