“This is okay,” Danny affirmed. More than okay, really. His skin was thrumming, his heart thudding, his arms were around Marissa. ‘Okay’ was an understatement. Admittedly this didn’t exactly fit in with his proposed scenario of taking the summer to figure out what they wanted. Logically, he supposed, it would have been more sensible to figure things out right there and then. But right there and then had involved Marissa sitting close and saying great things and it had seemed like a much better plan to kiss her. So that led to them being in their current situation.

“It’s definitely not how I thought my morning was going to go,” Marissa said. Danny chuckled.

“I planned on going for a swim,” he teased her. “Not that I’m objecting to your distraction.” Danny could foresee that this was going to get confusing and out of hand quite quickly if they didn’t finish the conversation they had started. Merlin damn it.

He sighed. “Okay, how’s this.” The fifth year worked hard to collect all his thoughts back together and put together a coherent plan that would at least get them to the summer break. “We’re not a couple,” Danny suggested, because there would be no point in that. He would bet against them remaining together. “So no obligations.” It was new territory for him. Admittedly he had managed to juggle Marissa and Camilla for a short while with no strings attached, but he hadn’t exactly been comfortable with it, and had called them both off for a variety of reasons. This time there definitely were strings attached, so it wasn’t exactly the same scenario. He didn’t know how he was going to handle it, if he were being honest, but he was prepared to give it a try. He had missed being with Marissa, but he’d managed to maintain their friendship by believing that she felt nothing further for him. He knew he was going to find it a lot harder to stay away from her now that he knew she liked him, too. “I’ll give this casual thing another try.”

His main objection at this juncture was that he was willingly granting Marissa the freedom to go and be with other people, if she wanted to. That was surprisingly okay in some regards, because her ability to have fun without overthinking and ascribing meaning to everything was actually one of her many appealing qualities. However Danny couldn’t deny that he found it very difficult to accept her being with anyone else. Jealousy was not something he was used to experiencing, but he suspected that’s what it might be.

“Until the summer,” he clarified. He had just a few short weeks to give the casual approach a trial run. If he struggled with it - and he suspected he might - he didn’t want Marissa to be under any illusion that he would automatically go back to this arrangement when they were back at school. That seemed like too far away yet to contemplate with any certainty.
