A fine accomplishment

Claudia felt a little betrayed by her own thoughts as she cheerfully realized that she had found a way to make Marley stop talking. The silence was peculiar, but it afforded Claudia a moment to contemplate her own decision while Marley did likewise. Marley had brought along three bright shades, one that changed color and two glittery polishes, to add to Claudia’s Blush, Fawn, and pale pink, as well as the bolder dark cherry pink, a bright turquoise, and a metallic gold polish named Felix that Claudia purchased when she and Marley had shopped together. In the absence of a grey, silver or pale blue to co-ordinate with her outfit, Claudia decided to try Marley’s bright purple. It wasn’t something she would normally wear, and she could take it off as soon as she was back in her dormitory if she hated it.

When Marley eventually spoke again, Claudia was not in the least surprised to hear her request all the colors. That isn’t to say Claudia would have predicted this response, but it was such a Marley thing to say that she felt she ought to have foreseen it. Claudia smiled. “Of course,” she replied. Sometimes Marley could be a little too loud and outspoken, but sometimes she was just the right amount of eccentric, which apparently was a quality that made her very likeable. Claudia lined the bottles up, allocating the calmer, more neutral shades for Marley’s pinky fingers, and the glitter for her thumbs. “Having all the colours will suit you,” she added, meaning it to be a compliment, and assuming it would be taken as such. Often, Claudia thought Marley looked ridiculous in her outfits, but she couldn’t deny that the other girl’s style suited her personality. In fact, very occasionally, Marley wore something that Claudia quite liked. The skirt she had on now, in fact, was beautiful.

“I love your skirt, by the way,” she said as she unscrewed the lid of the first polish and arranged Marley’s hand on the table (She knew that the varnish would last longer over a base coat, and probably they should do something with cuticles first, but Claudia had no base coat, and she was still learning how to manicure. As a first attempt at painting somebody else’s nails this would have to suffice). She could never conceive of wearing the aforementioned garment, because it was too short by far (Claudia sometimes wore skirts that were shorter than full length, but always with boots so her legs remained entirely concealed; that skirt was too short for any boots suitable for a thirteen-year-old). “I might try to find something with a similar pattern to wear Christmas Eve - we always go to a ball,” Claudia explained. It was one of the few winter social events that encouraged all the children, regardless of age, to attend, so it was one of the few engagements with which Claudia was suitably familiar for it to not cause her too much anxiety.
