I'm definitely happy with it

Marley beamed widely, delighted in equal parts with Claudia’s agreeable response and her compliment. “Thank you!” This, too, was directed at both of her friend’s statements. She wasn’t expecting at all that Claudia would want multiple colours on her nails, although she was of the strong and (totally unjustified because since when did she even wear nail polish? Since Halloween, that’s when) opinion that a basic alternating pattern with, like, one of the bright solid colours and that shiny gold would jazz up Claudia’s outfit and still be consistent enough that it would match with her friend’s style. Not that Claudia dressed predictably, exactly, but she didn’t dress unpredictably, either. But maybe she would still be open to playing with a few different colours. Just probably not the glitteriest ones.

Claudia seemed to have as good a sense of what Marley liked as Marley thought she had about what Claudia liked, because she ordered the bottles between them in such a way that the glitteriest ones lined up with Marley’s thumbs. “That looks perfect,” the kinky-haired girl enthused. Thumbs were the most visible fingers, most of the time, so of course she wanted them to be the boldest! “You’ve got such a great eye for colour. Like, it’s an awesome scale.” The way that she said this possibly made it sound like Marley was an expert on colour gradients, which was absolutely untrue. She loved art, and crayons and colouring books had been her second-favourite toy as a kid - her biggest favourite was Lego, duh - but she was an artist as much as she was a musician: she admired it and acted like she understood it but stick her in Lyra’s art studio and she’d come out with a mess on her clothes instead of her canvas.

Okay, that wasn’t a perfect metaphor to her musicianship, because at least when she poked her mum’s keyboard or her dad’s guitar strings, she didn’t get the instrument smeared over her jeans like she did chalk or paint or clay. But whatever. You got the point.

She couldn’t help blushing a little at Claudia’s next comment, which was also a compliment, but it was fine because it was hidden under her skin. (Marley had never properly realized such benefits of dark skin until this year but, wow, it’d come in handy!) “Than-- wait, did you say a ball?” As usual, she caught on to one word and couldn’t quite stick it together with the rest. She did like this skirt, but it wasn’t very ball-appropriate. The word ball made her think of, like, Beauty and the Beast. “Like, a real ball, with fancy dresses and music and cute boys?” Marley hummed contentedly at the thought, grinning, one particular cute boy on her mind. Her finger twitched automatically as Claudia worked on it and she made a minor attempt to still it. “Sorry. But, gosh, I can’t imagine going to a ball. That’s so amazing. I always thought of balls as, like, something out of a fairy tale; I didn’t know people still did that!”
