Nope, this is perfect

Her declaration that balls were fairy-tale-esque was laughed off by Claudia. Marley giggled in response, shaking her head automatically before remembering that she was trying to keep her hands still and moving her head had the unfortunate but not really unexpected side effect of moving all of her hair and that in turn made the rest of her body jiggle because, like, her hair was basically her centre of gravity or polar axis or whatever science term made sense. (She wasn’t old enough yet to take Magical Sciences, and they hadn’t really talked about the solar system in detail in her Muggle elementary school, not that she honestly remembered much of elementary school anyways since starting at RMI. It was literally eons ago. So she could be forgiven for not knowing exactly the right terms to use here, right?)

“No, no, it still sounds totally exciting,” she insisted, which it did. A family ball wasn’t quite the same mental image as a fairy tale ball, but it was still probably very glamorous and lively and fun, if not nearly romantic enough for Marley’s interests. What was the point in dressing up in one’s best dress if your parents were gonna be lurking around all night? Marley had seen her parents and even sometimes her grandparents get snuggly with each other (or, well, other people, at least in the case of her parents), and they didn’t seem to mind if she was around, but that was different for adults. Adults had experience with that kind of thing. Marley’s experience, meanwhile, was basically non-existent, and she wanted plenty of time to improve that situation before her parents started watching while pretending not to (or more accurately, probably just saving things to make fun of her for later, at least in her dad’s case).

Although… “Wait, were you just bluuuushing?” she teased Claudia, dragging out the word. “So family-friendly balls aren’t too boring, then, huh?” Her friend had never been the gossipy type, but one could hope! Marley grinned at her optimistically, picking up on her sarcasm. “That’s awesome. Makeup is fun. I’m not the best at it - right now I only use lip gloss, really - but it’s still fun. I like all the colours. But, don’t be silly; I bet you’re always one of the cute girls! You’re so pretty. You should definitely find one of these cuter, nicer boys to dance with, yeah? And then tell me all about how it goes,” she rambled on cheerfully.

Pausing to take a breath, she glanced down at her nails, pleased to see how nicely they were coming along, and then attempted to ask Claudia a Casual Question. It probably wasn’t a super good attempt, or even a slightly good attempt, because being Casual was hard when you wanted to talk about something specific, but she tried anyways. “So, what kind of cute boys have you seen at these balls? I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours,” she wheedled before quickly amending, “I mean, not that I’ve seen any at balls. That’s not really the kind of thing I get invited to, obviously… Or is it obvious? Like, why shouldn’t I be invited?” Marley genuinely stopped to consider this for a moment before shaking her head, again forgetting how this jiggled the rest of her but this time not remembering to correct it. “Hah, sorry, that’s sorta off-topic. Go on!” The encouraging way she said it, expecting Claudia to answer, made it obvious that Marley had already misplaced her goal of being Casual. Because of course she had.
