Ruben Lundqvist
I dare you to enjoy this
Wed Nov 22, 2017 20:53

“Kick her for me, Mikael.”

The only thing he got in response from the misshapen lump that was his little brother balanced on his shoulders was not a kick but a wordless squeak. Ruben sighed loudly in mock exasperation. “What, am I supposed to kick her myself? What if I drop you? Oj, the hair, Kalle, sluta det.” Having paused to raise one foot, he had then cut this short when his very minor wobbling caused the first-year to clutch at his scalp. Very few people had permission to grab his hair, and neither of the people he was with right now fell into that category, sitting on him or not. There was no reason for his hair to be on the receiving end of such treatment.

Admittedly, Ruben could have tied it back in a plait before he'd scooped up Mikael without warning and plunked him down higher up than the kid had been previously, which would have removed the inclination to grab his hair for support. But that was dumb. Why bother restraining the gloriously long locks when he had every intention of letting it fan out around him in the pool? Besides, Mikael was twelve and should know better by now, anyways. His brother was smart and didn't need to be babied. He could handle a little scolding.

Another thing that was dumb was Kaye's insistence on wearing big-ass heels on their walk from Aquila to the party. That was precisely why Ruben had insisted on detouring to Draco so that he could snark at passing students until one could be persuaded to go fetch Mikael for him. If Kaye was going to be stubborn enough to refuse his generous offer to carry her and insist on walking in heels to a pool party, of all things, then she could handle walking the long way to the Rec Centre. With him jibing her the whole way about it, of course. Bit of a waste that his brother wouldn't play along, though.

(Yet another thing that was dumb was Kaye's swimsuit. He hadn't mentioned it explicitly to her, because his experience with Elin, one of their neighbours in Umeå, had taught him not to comment negatively on girls' swimming attire unless he wanted to get yelled at and then face hours being dragged around the nearest shopping centre in search of the Perfect Swimsuit - or as the menace of the then-fourteen-year-old had put it, a multi-hour lesson to teach him how to comment appropriately on swimsuits. Ugh. Anyways, there wasn't anything wrong with Kaye's swimsuit, except that it did not include the metallic bra she had bragged about wearing that time she took her pants off on the Pitch. For that random transfer Nolan, too. What kind of creep was the guy? And why had she played him on like that?)

(The thought did not occur to Ruben that his own interest in ogling Kaye could also be defined as creepy. Because they were friends and sort of dating but not really. Nothing was truly creepy between friends and more-or-not. No one could argue otherwise.)

(The thought did occur to him, however, that internally grumping about Kaye's behaviour was a possible sign of their friendship being more of a more than a not. But hanging on to that kind of confusing trail of thought was silly; it wasn't like that would resolve it or anything. Clearly he should just get his mind off it, maybe by trying again to convince Kalle to kick her. His little sandals were dangling at a height that he could probably barely, and also perfectly, reach the top of her head...)

He did not succeed in this, but he did succeed in making Heather Bartel do a double-take when he marched past her in the hall, long strides intentionally challenging Kaye's ability to keep up in her impressively tall, heeled monstrosities. Heather was in no way, shape, or form Ruben's target audience. Not today, not ever. But he always took double-takes as a compliment and smirked back at her before whispering a hasty “What about her? Kick her!” up to Mikael, which the boy squeaked at again and ignored again. How were they even related? Seriously, sometimes Ruben really questioned it.

On the list of things Ruben never questioned, though, was his attire. As long as it fit with and kept up his image, he was golden. His decision for the party was especially golden, as it combined his image in multiple dimensions: his proudly-displayed industrial piercing (featuring a new water-themed piece of jewelry for the occasion) and heavily spiked wrists matched perfectly with his briefs, coloured nude with a random smattering of classic tattoo images, and the abundance of hard muscle now on display. Clothes were occasionally necessary, but right now was not one such occasion. The Swede was more than happy to make the trek from their dorm to Kalle's to the party itself while baring all - or as "all" as he felt suitable, considering this party wasn't exclusive access for the older years only, like Marissa’s last clothing optional party had been. Alas, no sleeping seemed expected for today. But he was well-rested, well-flexed, and totally ready.

The minute they got through the door, Ruben swung his little brother down, holding him jokingly too high off the ground before laughing and lowering him. “Shoo. Go have fun.” “You also, good-bye Kaye,” the kid piped back before obediently shooing himself off towards the pool. Ruben, for his part, turned to face Kaye and, wearing what he thought was a convincing mock-serious expression, informed her, “I have business to attend to. Please do not trip yourself too hard in those crazy shoes and do something stupid like break your neck, because then you will be dead and I will not get to say ‘I told you so’.” Impulsively, and not at all because any number of other dudes could be lurking and thinking of creeping on Kaye, he ducked down quickly and planted a kiss on her cheek. Ruben waited a moment, curious to see how or if she would respond, before cracking a grin and turning to swagger off in the direction of nothing in particular, swinging his super metal towel over his newly Kalle-freed shoulder.

‘Nothing in particular’ turned into ‘a pineapple-shaped chair’. Why the hell was there a pineapple-shaped chair? That was baffling. The chair in question also featured a green cushion that might have just had plush spikes, but something about it seemed suspicious to him. “Hey,” he got the attention of the student nearest him, gesturing at the chair. “I dare you to sit on it.”
