I’ll be reel-ly careful

Ah, yes. Holland was very aware that Marley was going on a date. They were aware because when they’d gotten back to Lyra after Ancient Runes one day, Marley had been waiting outside their door. She was literally bouncing and had been so excited that she had shouted out her news before Holland could let her into the room. It was sweet that Marley was so happy, although she didn’t seem sure whether or not she was interested in girls, which could be a problem down the line. Holland had congratulated Marley, reminded her that it was not a good idea to go around shouting this information unless she was sure that Teal was comfortable with being outed, and offered to help her with makeup and outfit selection before the date.

They’d heard about Drew Tennant and Connor fighting in the Cetus Common Room from Heather Bartel. Heather was a suspect source of information despite her claims that she had been told all the details by Drew himself. All reports from actual Ceti pointed to Heather’s account being accurate—except, Holland suspected, from some embellishment related to how long the punching went on—and Connor was being blacklisted in a manner that closely resembled how Lucien had been blacklisted last year. If possible Connor seemed to have offended even more people, although as far as Holland could tell Drew had not deliberately recruited his Housemates to harass Connor.

Having been the center of a similar issue, Holland found it much easier to handle from an outside perspective. Rose had told everyone that she was going to kill Connor, but the task either hadn’t been accomplished yet or Heather hadn’t found out about it.

Connor was a touchier subject as far as Holland was concerned, so they focused on what Claudia had said about Marley. Holland had spent enough time with Rose and Danny to know that being any flavor of queer was emphatically taboo in pureblood society. It was why Dade having gender stuff was such a big deal, and why Danny confessing feelings for Holland was particularly fraught. But those concerns both had to do with the pureblood’s identity. Holland didn’t see why the date meant that Claudia couldn’t be friends with Marley anymore. Marley was halfblooded, so surely it wouldn’t cast aspersions on Claudia’s character if her non-Society friend was dating another girl.

They picked up a different brush and began applying highlighter to Claudia’s cheekbones. “Why does that mean you and Marley can’t be friends anymore?” Holland asked. They suspected they knew why Claudia thought that, but the theory didn’t hold water in Holland’s experience. Not that Holland was particularly eager to discuss their recent experience with Claudia. “I mean, Danny is friends with me, and I’m not straight either.”
