I’m sure you can dolfind one

Holland, admittedly, had had similar thoughts related to Marley’s date with Teal. The younger Lyra had said that she liked Teal but wasn’t sure whether she like-liked her, but regardless that boys hadn’t really worked out for Marley so far, so going on a date with a girl couldn’t hurt. Holland was typically a proponent of trying new things to see if one likes them, but Marley’s experiment had the potential to hurt Teal if it turned out she wasn’t interested. The other option would have been to reject Teal outright, so Holland supposed this was the best path forward for Marley, but she should probably warn Teal.

Why was Holland always the one explaining queer identities to their friends’ younger siblings? There was admittedly a fairly good reason for them to conduct this conversation, but honestly. They were hardly the only queer person at RMI; they weren’t even the only nonbinary person in the school, although Maverick was not particularly approachable to an underclassman in search of education on most subjects, particularly this one. If Anssi or Kit needed a talk, it was Marissa’s turn.

Holland used a makeup sponge to blend the highlighter and contour. “Well, you know,” Holland said, “people can be interested in more than one gender. Marissa is,” Marissa had been out for ages so Holland had no qualms about reminding her boyfriend’s sister. Holland had a strong preference for people who presented as masculine, but that didn’t necessarily rule out women, so they continued, “And so am I.”

And so, actually, was Danny. That was—well, that was interesting. Unexpected, even. It was something which they had been mentally reviewing since the argument with Danny. Given the repressive social climate in which he had been raised, Danny acknowledging that he had feelings for them was significant. And he trusted Holland to know about it.

Claudia absolutely could not know. If she was so uncomfortable with the idea of her best (according to Marley) friend dating a girl that they could no longer be friends, Holland doubted she would react well to her brother being interested in a nonbinary person. She couldn’t very well stop being Danny’s sister, but her having that information couldn’t be good. What if—

“But I think,” Holland said slowly, “that the important thing in this situation isn’t your comfort level. Marley has been your friend, so you must care about her. If dating a girl makes her happy, then I think you could be supportive of her.” Granted, Claudia hadn’t been an especially good friend to Marley as far as Holland had been told—she had deliberately dated the boy she knew Marley liked—but if Marley believed that they had made up and was no longer upset about it, that was well and good.

“It might be outside of your comfort zone, but I think challenging oneself in that regard makes one a better person.” The formal ‘one’ seemed like it would resonate better with Claudia than an informal ‘you,’ so Holland invoked it, but it did feel awkward to say. “That’s sort of what you’re going for with this makeover, right?”
