It’s open to interpretation

For the first time since receiving news about this debacle in October, Claudia felt some spark of optimism. She felt remiss in not bringing her concerns to Holland sooner, as they were clearly the more rational component of the pairing (although Claudia would confess that she had falsely presumed her parents would have been more effective in deterring any continuation of this farce). “Good,” she replied to Holland’s offer, not minding that some emotion - something akin to relief, perhaps with a hint of positivity - was audible, even in one syllable. “I was hoping you’d say that.” Claudia crossed to stand closer to Holland; she had not noticed anyone else in the vicinity but caution could not hurt in this instance, as she was reluctant to be overheard.

“I heard Danny talking to our parents,” Claudia began, resisting the urge to put her hands in her pockets by playing with the clasp on her tan leather bag, instead, it’s long strap resting on her shoulder. “He said he doesn’t think other people will be a problem.” She did not elaborate on the context, but believed it was implied by their previous dialogue. “He’s never been unpopular, he doesn’t understand.” Claudia looked directly at Holland, knowing they would appreciate her concern. While Holland had a firm group of friends their age at Rocky Mountain, Claudia knew there had been previous concerns with other students. She also knew what it was like to be friendless herself, and to be laughed at by acquaintances she had thought were friendly.

“He’s only thinking about you.” While she was openly resentful about this fact, on this occasion Claudia was seeking only to enlighten Holland, so her delivery reflected this. “He’s got friends who would stop speaking to him because of you. Our parents have friends who will cut them out for allowing Danny to be with you. My whole family could be cast out of our society,” Claudia implored them to understand. Her brother must have made a poor effort at explaining all of this to Holland, because if they truly understood, they were not likely to subject not one, but two of their friends to this inevitable outcome.

“Danny hasn’t thought about any of that,” Claudia continued; she had heard him talk to their parents about how he would deal with objections from others, and Danny had not even hinted at dealing with adverse reactions. He always saw the best in people, which was a trait Claudia had admired in him before, but now it just seemed foolish. “He doesn’t understand how people can be when they don’t like you. But you know.” Claudia held Holland’s gaze. “And that’s what you’re going to do to Danny. And to me. So I am asking you to stop it. If you really like Danny, you won’t do that to him.”
