Since Dade had accidentally set the hallway on fire after trying to hex Claudia with the fireants spell, he had been very anxious. More than once, he had looked up in panic from a book he was reading in the library because he thought he heard Claudia’s voice. It usually wasn’t anything; he usually was reassured by Drew or Remington that there was nothing there. Sometimes he sent Kit on an expedition to find out anyway. Kit usually jumped up and saluted before running off to see if she could find Claudia or Connor anyway. She hadn’t ever found them. Kit was actually surprisingly thorough when she got focused on something, so Dade believed her when she said they weren’t there. But things had kind of relaxed and he felt less of a need to cling to his friends all the time.

He made his way to the theater. He was in search of Madeleine, who he hadn’t seen since the conflagration. Dade suspected that Madeleine probably didn’t approve of setting people on fire, no matter how deserved or accidental the situation was. He hoped that her dad hadn’t told her what had happened. Actually, he hoped that Drew hadn’t either. Dade was never quite sure how much Drew told Madeleine, although he would venture a guess that Madeleine didn’t know about self-defense club. Especially since Drew’s dad had told him to stop with looking up magic that was maybe midway between dark magic and regular magic. Of course, what Mr. Tennant had done was tell Drew to talk to his stepdad, Professor McKindy, about dueling and Professor McKindy had extended the invitation to learn how to duel to Drew’s friends. Technically there was already a dueling club, but Professor Embers didn’t really like them attacking each other, which was the entire point of dueling club, so Dade didn’t go very often anymore.

The last time he was in the the theater, he had run into Rose’s boyfriend Emmett walking around in high heels. Dade was careful to make sure there was nobody in the theater before entering it.

It wasn’t unusual for Dade to find Madeleine in the costume room, so that was where he went. He didn’t know if they were going to play dress-up or a board game or something entirely different today. Madeleine didn’t play chess, although Dade wanted to teach her, but she did play checkers. Dade didn’t like checkers as much as he liked chess, but it was pretty okay. But he wanted to play dress-up, mostly. He immediately squashed that thought. He didn’t want to play dress-up, he was being nice to his friend’s little sister. That was what he was doing. Dade was doing something perfectly normal. He was being a nice person. That was what was going on.

“Madeleine?” Drew called, sticking his head in the costume room but not seeing her immediately. “Are you here?” he asked the air.

Then he realized that he was in the theater. People besides Madeleine who came into the theater included Madeleine and Drew’s dad. Since the whole thing with Claudia, Dade wasn’t entirely sure how Mr. Tennant felt about him and he didn’t want to find out. What if he didn’t want Dade playing with Madeleine anymore, because he thought Dade had just randomly attacked Claudia with fire? Dade stuck his hands emphatically in the pockets of his khakis. He wasn’t wearing robes because he wasn’t in class and he was trying to be less like Connor, which Dade was pretty sure was technically a violation of dress code. He didn’t need to get into more trouble. This was a bad idea.

Anxiously, Dade began walking back to the theater door, feeling disappointed and inexplicably, a little like crying. Everything was terrible and it was all Claudia’s fault.
