Well that was straightforward

Madeleine was right there all of a sudden, and she was saying his name princess name and hugging him. Generally Dade wasn’t the biggest fan of hugs, but when they were hugs from Madeleine or one of Professor Rob’s kids (usually Julia, who liked playing princesses and tea parties with them sometimes) it was okay. Or sometimes from Rose, but he usually had to make a face and try to escape when Rose hugged him because it was gross and embarrassing when your older sister did that in public and you were fourteen years old.

“Yeah we can play,” Dade said, feeling relieved. It seemed like Madeleine wasn’t mad at him, so maybe she didn’t know about the fire, or maybe she thought that he wasn’t to blame for the fire. Either way, he wasn’t going to bring it up. It was going to be much better if they just did what they usually did. “I don’t mind what we play,” he added, ignoring the preference hiding in the back of his mind. Madeleine usually wanted to play dress-up anyway, so it was pretty safe to leave it up to her. Dade rarely suggested that they play dress-up and when he did it was always in a slightly embarrassed tone of voice and quietly. He was easily dissuaded from playing dress-up if Madeleine wanted to do something else; when Julia was around she tyrannically demanded everyone wear princess clothing, so that was different. And since Professor Rob’s wife had talked to Dade about maybe being the official babysitter after Marissa graduated, Dade could justify the decisions he was making to do that sort of thing.

What if someone came in though? Dade shifted uncomfortably. Maybe this had been a bad idea. A really bad idea, all things considered. But he’d spent so much time not explaining what the problem with Claudia was that being around someone who knew - something - was nice. Even if that someone was five years younger than him and his best friend’s little sister. And Dade was pretty sure that Madeleine wouldn’t like it if someone was mean to Dade because he liked playing dress-up with her.
