Yeah we can play.” Madeleine bounced up and down on the balls of her feet in joy. Today was already going so much better than she had expected! He was even letting her pick what they played. Sorry, her room would just have to stay pink for another day. She could pick paint any time. Dade was here now.

“Let’s play dress-up,” she said, because it was her most favorite game, and because Dade had said he didn’t mind. Some people would say that they didn’t have an opinion on something when actually they did care but didn’t want to tell you for whatever reason—Madeleine thought that was really dumb, because then no one would end up with what they wanted—but Daisy wasn’t like that. As far as she could tell, he usually said what he meant.

Madeleine noticed Dade sounded a little tired, and kind of happy-but-in-a-sad-way, and she remembered what Drew had told her about him having a rough time lately. (Actually Drew had said Dade was having a “crappy” time, but Madeleine wasn’t supposed to say that word, and also she was pretty sure that Drew wasn’t supposed to say that word either, but she wasn’t going to tell on him or anything, because that would be really crappy mean of her.) When Madeleine felt bad it was usually because she was lonely or bored or got a bad grade on her spelling test, but she usually didn’t have bad moods that lasted longer than a couple of hours. Drew had made it sound like Dade had been feeling bad for days. The only time that had ever happened to Madeleine was when Godric died, but then they had gotten Circe and things had been all better.

She wondered what had made Daisy feel like that. Maybe it was something she could help with! Dad had said she would be a good counselor because part of the job was listening to people’s problems and helping them feel better, and she was good at that. She wasn’t sure whether it would help more to bring it up or to wait until Dade brought it up. Of course if she waited he might not ever bring it up, but she could always ask later, probably.

So Madeleine took Dade’s hand and led the way back to the costume room. “We can play princesses,” she suggested, thinking specifically of a pirate princesses game for today. “Are you still going with Daisy Ophelia or do you have a different name now?” Daisy liked to swap around different middle names when they played princesses. Madeleine’s favorite so far had been Daisy Aurora. It sounded the most princessy.
