Marissa started thinking of other shows she would rather do than Footloose. The problem, which Garen always pointed out to her, was that her desires weren’t school appropriate. Marissa liked shows that mattered, or that were just really freaking cool. Usually, they ended up being a blend of the two. She’d love to do Hair but there was no way she was going to be in a show with a nude scene any time soon. And she knew that the school would never do Spring Awakening.

Her mom liked to point out that she’d get a chance to do shows like that in college. While Marissa enjoyed the arts, she wasn’t ready to commit to doing theater or dance or whatever for a whole career. It was a hard concept to explain to her mom. Abigale Embers had known what she wanted to do since she came to Rocky Mountain International. There was never a question in the Lyra’s mind. She was going to be an actress. Marissa didn’t know what she was going to be. She was a great dancer, and she enjoyed doing Important Things with theater, but who could make a career out of that?

Besides Lin Manuel Miranda. He could do anything. And he didn’t start out as a theater person for his career, anyway. He taught middle school reading. If Lin Manuel Miranda spent time not knowing what to do with his artistic talents, how was Marissa supposed to figure it out?

“I’ll have to take your word for it.”

Danny brought Marissa’s attention back to him, and she pondered. “Yeah, it’s not like you’ve done much…” she trailed off before finishing her sentence. She was going to say stage kissing, since Danny didn’t do shows with them, but now that she thought about it, she couldn’t remember him ever talking about kissing anyone. Or being with anyone romantically. She searched her memory and came up short.

Marissa sat back up and looked at Danny. “Have you ever- wait, you’ve kissed before, right?” She blinked. “You’re too pretty not to have- I mean, you’ve kissed people. Haven’t you?”

It didn’t look like Danny was going to kiss her, and Marissa couldn’t help but be disappointed by that. She wasn’t the type of person to push someone if they said no; it wasn’t her style. People just ... more
