Something about a swallow

It made sense that Madeleine played on her own sometimes, now that Dade thought about it. He had only been alone for one year, since Connor was only a year older than him, but it had been a very lonely year. He had wished for a pet or someone to talk to or something, but all that happened was lessons from the tutor who came by to do basic lessons with them. He hadn’t ever played pretend or anything on his own, but he had taken to wandering around the land that the Farnon manor was on, and reading a lot. Well, Dade had always been an avid reader, but it had been more so that year. He couldn’t imagine how Madeleine must feel, with her older brother so much older than her. Although it seemed like there were a bunch of people willing to play with her when they could - it seemed weird to Dade that Madeleine called Professor McKindy “Aaron-dad” but he supposed she had to differentiate between her parents somehow. Drew just called him Aaron. Dade couldn’t imagine calling his father by his first name.

”You mean like that?”

“Yeah,” Dade said, turning toward the clothing racks so that Madeleine couldn’t see the sudden red flush of his face. “Like that.” He was about to change the subject when Madeleine asked why he had asked, and there was a weird feeling in his stomach but he answered anyway. “Sometimes - “ he probably shouldn’t say anything. It was probably weird to say something, and Madeleine was only eight, she was fun to play with but she wasn’t a teenager like him, she probably wouldn’t understand. But maybe that was the nice thing. “Sometimes I play dress-up on my own,” Dade said, a little more quietly than normal, just in case someone was listening. “Holland thinks that means I’m a nonbinary, like them. But I just want to play dress-up, and I like my princess name.” He paused. “But you’re the only one who knows.”

Sometimes he wished other people knew. Sometimes Dade thought about what would happen if his friends called him Daisy - with or without a middle name, he hadn’t decided on one yet after all - and then he thought that was weird and immediately stopped thinking it.

“It would be easier if I were a girl,” he added, shaking his head rapidly to get rid of the thoughts inside it.
