Madeleine proposed the concept with such ease that Dade was almost sure he misheard her. Why didn’t he just be a girl? He blinked.

“That’s not how that works,” Dade said. “You don’t just be a girl, you’re either a girl or a boy.” There was a pause before Dade belatedly remembered Holland. “Or a nonbinary. But you don’t get to choose, you just are.”

There were a lot of things that would be easier if Dade were a girl. He would get to have a name he liked (he hated his name sometimes) and he would get to wear clothes that weren’t just the same boring clothes that Connor wore. Rose had all sorts of interesting clothes, and boots, and jewelry that she could wear because she was a girl and that he couldn’t except when he was playing dress-up with little kids. All he could wear were stupid boring khakis and stupid boring polo shirts and stupid boring white socks, and that sucked. Girls could also wear makeup, which Dade thought was a little intimidating but always looked so good on people. He had never tried with makeup outside of playing dress-up, but maybe it was a lot of fun.

He turned to face Madeleine, who was looking at the shoes. After seeing Emmett wear the high heels, Dade kind of wanted to try some too but they were so intimidating. That was another thing girls could do that boys couldn’t do. Being a boy was awful. Dade had never really thought about it like this before, but he was pretty sure the if he could choose between being a boy and being a girl, he would choose being a girl. He didn’t know why anyone would choose being a boy. It was so stupid. But Madeleine was eight and had a really good imagination, so maybe she really thought you could choose which one you were.
