For just a moment it seemed as though Marissa was going to interpret his comment they way it had been intended, vis-à-vis stage kissing. But then she sat up, and said “Have you ever- wait, you’ve kissed before, right?”

Her response suggested to him that Marissa, at least, if not the rest of their friends, had made incorrect assumptions about his experiences. He had never intentionally concealed the truth; the subject had just never come up before. “Nope,” he replied, and even from that distance he could see her blink in what he assumed was surprise. He sensed that a Big Deal was about to be made, so he stood from his audience seat, declaring, “It’s not a big deal.”

While he had no problem having this conversation with his friend, he didn't necessarily want to share it with anyone who might happen about them, so he crossed to the stairs and leapt up them two at a time. He spared a brief moment to indulge himself in that fact that she’d called him pretty. It wasn't an adjective he would use to describe himself - he thought he was okay-looking, with a goofy charm - but he would take it.

He sat next to Marissa on the edge if the stage and joined her in dangling his legs over the side. It looked higher from there, and the pit loomed dauntingly below them. The auditorium seemed bigger, too; Danny could imagine all the seats being full and even he, who thrived on being the centre of attention, didn't relish having that many pairs of eyes on him. Performers were serious thrill-seekers, he decided.

“I’ve thought about it,” he said with a half-hearted shrug. He had, at various points over the past couple of years, imagined what it might be like to kiss Marissa, or Rose (and even sometimes Holland, which was confusing, so Danny didn't allow his thoughts to dwell on that for long), or a couple of the less prissy pureblood girls he met regularly at socialite parties. “I guess I just want my first kiss to mean something. To be with someone I care about. That’s… that's not weird, is it?”

              • I think we're both pretty unique - Marissa, Sat Feb 4 15:48
It didn’t look like Danny was going to kiss her, and Marissa couldn’t help but be disappointed by that. She wasn’t the type of person to push someone if they said no; it wasn’t her style. People just ... more
