Remington knew that people question her and Claudia’s friendship. They were two very different girls. On paper, they didn’t make much sense, and the Draco could acknowledge that. She was a halfblood with a very Muggle father and a mother who obsessively studied Muggle culture. While she never travelled for pleasure, they had been all over for most of Remington’s childhood for her mother’s work. Building lasting friendships wasn’t something she’d known to do until coming to Rocky Mountain International. She liked people and liked making friends, but she didn’t really have anyone from her past - minus her friends from summer camp (and honestly, friends didn’t feel like the right term for the two gossipy girls). They had very different sets of privileges, world views, futures.

And yet they worked.

Claudia thanked her for sharing her story, and Remington nodded a little in response. “You’re welcome.”

Part of her wanted to stop Claudia from confronting Connor. It didn’t sound like a pleasant experience for her friend, and she knew the Cetus had plenty going on. She always did. But it was nice to know people besides her, Drew, and Marley were willing to call Connor out on his shit. She got the feeling DJ would, too, but she didn’t trust that it would exclude some punching or hexes. With Claudia, she could at least rule out punching.

“Thanks. You don’t have to talk to him if you don’t want to,” she felt compelled to say, “because he’s your friend and I imagine that being kind of stressful. But I’m definitely not going to stop you, either. I just appreciate that you listened.”

When Claudia asked if there was anything she could do, Remington genuinely thought about it. Minus this fiasco, her life looked like it would be fine. Good friendships, her prefect badge, and the start of a little tutoring business all sprang to mind. She gave a small smile and shook her head, realizing how relieved she felt to actually have told Claudia. “No. I think… I just needed to tell you. I’m going to be okay.” She paused. “Is there anything I can do for you? I know listening… it isn’t always easy.”

“Is there anything I can do for you? I know listening… it isn’t always easy.” It was, admittedly, sometimes easier to determinedly defend one’s own opinion than to hear another perspective, but it... more
