Things were somehow better, the same, and worse all at once. She couldn’t figure out exactly how or why, but Remington knew the statement to be true. Some things did feel better. She didn’t feel as terrible around Leo, for example, as she had before midterm. Self-Defense club was going strong. Dakota even started showing up intermittently for meetings again. Other things were the same. Her friendships with Claudia and Anssi and Kit hadn’t faced a lot of change, and her academic ventures were still going strong. She had a couple steady students to tutor on Pearl Street. It was going exactly as well as she wanted.

But things also seemed worse. It felt like things from Kit’s party had blown over. She thought maybe everyone was past it. For some reason, though, things were different between her and Drew. She thought she was being paranoid or making it up. After multiple instances where he cut a conversation with her short or came up with a reason they couldn’t hang out together after all, Remington came to a conclusion: Drew was avoiding her. And it really hurt.

Remington still went to Garen every other week for counseling. After the infamous party, she’d needed it, and having a time she actively worked on stress management and feeling so lonely helped. Garen even gave her homework! It was mostly stuff like thought journaling. She relished the control that doing the therapy homework gave her. It didn’t make her feel better about Drew, though. After some encouragement, she brought up that a friend seemed to be avoiding her and they actually talked about it. It was a good reminder that talking helped. It would maybe even help more if she talked to Drew.

The Draco made her way to the theater, knowing that she might be able to catch Drew at the drive in movie. She’d come straight from tutoring on Pearl Street and didn’t have time to throw her school robes back on over her long sleeved, light pink floral button down shirt. She’d forgotten them in her room. Thankfully, when she arrived, it looked like the movie hadn’t started just yet and people were still getting their snacks. Her brown eyes, which she’d adorned with only mascara and a thin stroke of eyeliner, searched the room for Drew. When she spotted her best friend, she smiled and strode towards him.

She came to a fast stop, though, when she realized he was with Darlene. She hadn’t even noticed his girlfriend. When he leaned over to give Darlene a kiss after whatever he’d just said, Remington followed through with her brain’s only direction: find a place to sit out of sight as quickly as possible.

Remington practically threw herself into the first open car seat she could find, only realizing a few seconds too late that the car wasn’t empty. She blushed, realizing she probably seemed a little crazy, jumping into a fake car out of breath. She’d just wanted to talk to Drew and not catching him alone totally made her chicken out. She offered her accidental companion an apologetic look and put her hands in the pockets of her green asymmetrical skirt. “Sorry. Was someone sitting here? I can totally go.”
