I can play along!

“Hi, Claudia!” Marley chirped up happily at being noticed. She’d snuck in the back of the theatre a few minutes ago (basically hours) and had been doing her best to stay nice and quiet in her aisle seat, of course, but she always preferred to be nice and loud. So as much as she wanted to keep listening to her friend play the piano, it was really a good thing that the song had ended because it felt like forever since she had last spoken, even though that last time she’d spoken had just been a ‘hello’ to Annie down the hall, who had told her she thought she saw Claudia go this way, which was why Marley was now here. Because she had totally important things to share with Claudia.

“Wow, that song was super pretty! Have you practiced it a lot?” she asked curiously, hopping up from her seat. Her cotton dress, which she had tie-dyed herself in a really bright rainbow, bounced around her knees as she hefted up a bulky cloth bag and slowly skipped down the centre aisle towards the stage. “I took some piano lessons when I was little, because my mum also plays piano but she isn’t very good at teaching it, but I didn’t get very far ‘cause the lessons were expensive and we kept moving anyways. And also ‘cause it was hard to keep practicing every day since I was always helping with my mum’s work too and that was more busy.”

Pausing for breath, and also pausing literally to re-adjust the bag in her arms, Marley turned smiley brown eyes onto Claudia. “Anyways, I’m sorry to interrupt you,” she said honestly, “and if you wanna keep playing I can like, come back later or something? But when I realized we both had a free period, I had to come find you!” She plonked her bag down heavily on the edge of the stage. This was followed by planting her hands beside it and bodily heaving herself up to sit on the edge, where she kicked off her flip-flops so that her toes could dangle free. Marley didn’t usually wear flip-flops around the school, but she thought her feet had grown; they fit too tight in her sneakers now. Probably she should’ve told her mum that before school started again. Oh, well, Mum would owl her new shoes eventually, and she could wear flip-flops until then. They were pretty comfy, and they had pineapples patterned on them!

“I have something to show you!” she continued excitedly, shrugging off her knapsack onto the floor behind her. “I mean, we should totally just hang out too. It’s been forever, don’t you think? But also… ta-daaa!” With a dramatic flourish, she yanked off the bag to reveal a black boom box. It was an old model that her dad had nabbed from his radio station, kinda clunky and stuff, but her mum had charmed it for her and it played real smooth. She had sent Claudia a CD over the summer but hadn’t remembered until much later that her friend probably didn’t own a player. Of course, Marley didn’t have Claudia’s CD now, but she had a bunch of other random ones in her bookbag. Er, CD-bag. “Whaddaya think?”
