I can play nicely

Marley’s presence ignited a bittersweet combination of both relief and disappointment. Claudia was doing her best to be friends with the other girl, and she did like her, most of the time, but Marley’s interruption almost certainly meant that her piano playing was over with for the day. Even if Marley had nothing specific to say, she would still take the rest of the day in saying it, along with anything else that came to mind. “Hello, Marley,” she offered a small smile.

Claudia didn’t make any effort to answer Marley’s initial query about how much she had practised, because, predictably, the Lyra continued talking regardless. Claudia didn’t actually mind, it was quite sweet the way Marley was happy to share so many intimate details about her own life. Claudia didn’t think she would ever be that comfortable with anyone, but Marley could talk like that with anyone. It was admirable. “I don’t mind you being here,” she asserted. Claudia stood from the piano stool and walked over to where Marley had settled herself on the stage and kicked off her flipflops.

It soon transpired that Marley did have a reason for being there, and for seeing Claudia particularly. She had gifted her a large item, which Claudia was reasonably sure was a CD player. “Oh. Wow,” Claudia said, because she really didn’t know what to think. She hadn’t expected any sort of gift from Marley, ever, and had already received a CD from her over the summer, which she had rather callously not cared to listen to (she couldn’t easily while she was at home, but it was not outside the realm of possibility for her to acquire a CD player at home, and neither had she brought the aforementioned CD to school with her to listen to it where she knew a player might be available in the library. She had been so ungrateful, and that, at least was something she could address now.

“Marley that’s so nice of you,” Claudia said, smiling as widely as she could while talking and inspecting the machine. “Will you show me how to use it?” she asked. Marley was not only from a partly-Muggle family, but she also had experience with Muggle machines, so Claudia felt no shame at all in asking. Marley was practically an expert, whereas Claudia only knew about Muggles and their machines from her cultural studies classes. “Do you have any music with you now?” she asked.
