Marley nodded agreeably. “Opera is a good choice! I mean, not that any of these would be bad choices. All music is really great, just different,” she noted wisely. It wasn’t a proper, personal wisdom that she could share with Claudia, but it was something her dad said a lot and he was a proper musician, so she figured it wasn’t his personal wisdom, either. Just, like, a professional wisdom, or something. “My dad studied music in university and still plays a lot, and whenever I asked him what his favourite type of music was, he always said he couldn’t pick favourites ‘cause it’d just make them grumpy to be judged about their differences. His favourite music, he’d tell me, was ‘all music!’. Which is a really Dad sorta thing to say, yeah?”

Giggling to herself, she put back down The Occasional Sweatervests’ album, giving its charmed cover art a little wave goodbye. It was a fun mix of songs, especially for dancing around her dorm in her pyjamas, but she suspected it might have been a teeny bit too different for Claudia, especially if she was more used to classical-ish flowy music like what she’d been playing on the piano. Maybe they could try it another time… after she started Claudia on something more in-between to warm her up. Marley was about to open their selected disc but then suddenly the other girl said something about gifts and then suddenly she was trying to give Marley her own necklace and wow.

Marley talked super fast, and sometimes she didn’t think very hard about it because thinking didn’t feel necessary because most of what she had to say was so instinctual. But talking super fast had taught her how to also think very fast when she needed to. So it didn’t take her very long to realize that Claudia thought she was giving her the CD player, when in reality Marley had just wanted to bring it out and show her friend how amazing technology was and how good it made the CDs sound (turning the hard discs into music was Science, she knew, but also basically magic!). That was why Claudia was taking off her necklace, as, like, a gift in return. Which was kind of wrong because you should only give gifts when you really wanted to, not when you felt obligated to, unless it was someone’s birthday in which case you had to do something for them, at least according to her mum. It was also kind of wrong because Marley hadn’t meant to give her the CD player…

...But Claudia was acting so grateful. And Marley had, like, so many songs memorized, she didn’t need to listen to them all the time. And her dad could probably scavenge another CD player for her eventually and her mum would charm it too if she asked nice. Right?

“You don’t have to give me it,” she insisted, feeling kind of guilty about it. “I mean, it’s so amazingly nice of you, but you don’t have to.” Okay, she wasn’t really protesting very hard. Marley wasn’t even moving - just holding still as Claudia came closer to help put the necklace on her - and she wasn’t sure whether she felt more kind of guilty about that or about not thinking to give Claudia her CD player earlier. To just show it off wasn’t a very good-friend behaviour of her. But Claudia had misinterpreted her intentions, which was good ‘cause it meant she wasn’t offended that it wasn’t supposed to be a gift, but now she was giving her a necklace, which was bad ‘cause Marley didn’t deserve it!

Still she didn’t protest, just staring down at it in stunned silence short pause. “Thank you,” she said sincerely. “I…” Okay, she really didn’t deserve this. Setting down the album, she scooted forward to give Claudia a big hug.
