Marley made an effort to decline the necklace, but Claudia assumed her friend was just being meek (as opposed to really not wanting the gift), and as Marley made no move to stop her, Claudia continued to fasten the jewelry around her friend’s neck. She was right; it did look better on Marley. Claudia had never been sure about the yellow enamel against her own fair features, but the pop of color looked great against Marley’s darker complexion. Then Marley thanked her, and woah, then she hugged her. Claudia wasn’t really a hugger. She embraced her family members sometimes but she had known them her whole life. She had known Marley for just two years and only sometimes liked her; sometimes she merely tolerated her.

Stiffening a little, Claudia endured being suddenly enveloped in Marley’s arms, and gave the other girl and awkward pat on her shoulder in reciprocation. “You’re welcome,” she said, feeling quite unsettled. She pulled back as soon as she thought she could do so without causing offense. It might have been a moment too soon but it was already the height of Claudia’s tolerance of physical interaction and encroachment on her personal space.

“Let’s listen to this music, then,” she said briskly, in an effort to divert attention from her discomfort. She wished she had brought the CD that Marley had gifted her to school - she had no idea what music was on it, but she was starting to realise the likelihood that the aforementioned item would come up in their conversation. Claudia could potentially make an excuse for not running back to her dormitory to listen to it immediately, but if Marley asked her about it - or worse, wanted to listen to it together - then Claudia wasn’t sure she could come up with a suitable excuse. She resolved to write to her parents immediately that she was able to do so, and implore them to send it to her as quickly as possible. Luckily, Claudia’s bedroom at home was kept as meticulously tidy as her dormitory at school, so she would be able to direct her parents to it without any concern for them not being able to determine its whereabouts.

  • Definitely too much! - Marley, Fri Aug 4 00:06
Marley nodded agreeably. “Opera is a good choice! I mean, not that any of these would be bad choices. All music is really great, just different,” she noted wisely. It wasn’t a proper, personal wisdom ... more

        • Hold that thought - Claudia, Sat Aug 12 13:27
It seemed Marley’s attention was successfully diverted back to the CDs and player. Claudia supposed that was one of the advantages of her friend’s short attention span: Marley could accidentally... more

              • It's long gone - Marley, Thu Aug 17 22:24
When Claudia showed off her fingers, all that Marley could do was shrug a little, because that was weird. Not, like, bad-weird, just confusing-weird. Biting nails was a totally normal thing; Marley... more
