Hold that thought

It seemed Marley’s attention was successfully diverted back to the CDs and player. Claudia supposed that was one of the advantages of her friend’s short attention span: Marley could accidentally tangent herself from many a topic, but it was also relatively easy for Claudia to guide her towards a subject upon which she would rather they focus. Happily, Marley had passed the selected music disc case to Claudia, allowing the Cetus girl an opportunity to investigate its cover, while she gathered the others together and stored them safely.

Carefully, Claudia followed Marley’s instructions and took the music CD from its case. She opened the hatch on the player and placed the disc inside and closed the lid. There was another step then, to press a button, but there seemed to be all sorts of buttons all over this machine and Claudia wasn't at all sure which one she should be pressing. She had learned from Cultural Studies that pressing the wrong buttons could sometimes have very undesirable effects, which had encouraged her already existing reluctance to meddle with Muggle machines. She considered telling Marley that she didn't remember what to do next - not remembering was, in Claudia’s mind, better than admitting the knowledge had never been present in the first place; One couldn't be held accountable for their memory (or lack thereof), but ignorance was easily remedied - but there was a large button with a triangle on it that looked promising. She pushed it.

After a couple of heartbeats during which Claudia was certain she'd done it wrong, the music started playing. In spite of herself she smiled a little. She found herself thinking that Muggle did have some good inventions, but then they had to compensate for their lack of magic in more creative ways. For this, however, she gave them credit. The disc and the player were so small to produce such loud and clear sounds wherever they were taken.

A few bars played and, sensing that Marley might be about to launch into whatever it was that was on her mind, Claudia quickly said, “This is nice. I’m glad we’re friends, Marley.” It was the first time she had used that title aloud in front of the other girl, partly because she almost felt comfortable using it now, and partly because she did have something she wanted to ask of Marley. “Do you ever -, I mean, I wondered if you want to have a girls day. We could paint our nails,” she suggested as casually as she dared. So far her mother had painted her nails once, and Holland had been teaching her a little by about make up, but Claudia wanted to do more. The idea struck her suddenly and she felt compelled to act upon it. Having her own friend to help had been a fantasy over the summer, but maybe Marley could be useful. Claudia was objecting to her company less as they got better acquainted.
