I wanna jump on this thought-train, now!

Claudia moved slower than Marley would’ve, but she was pretty sure her friend had never seen a boom box before yet alone used one, so that was understandable. And it was, weirdly, super interesting to watch her! The Canadian had always assumed that teaching others how to do things would be boring, largely because she had so much fun as a student that she couldn’t imagine being a teacher would possibly be any better, and in some ways it was still boring now since it was taking Claudia so long to just put in the CD and play it which was such. an easy thing, but it was also cool because of how slow it was. Watching her made Marley realize that she had never watched someone this closely, except for like, the very first time ever that her dad showed her how to do it herself.

The play button was pushed, and Marley held her breath for the required few seconds of silence as the CD spun aimlessly to find its starting point. She knew the disc would work fine, because it had never not worked before, which was true for nearly all of her discs, really (there was a country one that she’d stepped on getting out of her mum’s truck a few years ago since she hadn’t noticed the album fall into the footwell, and it still played except it was off-key and skipped the last minute of every song except the fifth song for some reason). Still, Marley always held her breath because what if? What--

--and it started to play! The third-year exhaled and, beaming widely, began rocking back and forth in time to the music. She knew this song basically by memory; she could hum through all of it and tap her fingers along with the jumping string section. Of course, she couldn’t actually sing along, because Owens had, like, the biggest most glorious voice ever and even if Marley knew how to sing opera she would never be able to sing as good as him-or-her; she didn’t even know which! Sometimes Owens sung high, and sometimes low… Ooh, maybe her-or-him was really a both-or-none, like Holland. Maybe Claudia could tell from Owens’ singing-voice, since Claudia played music really well and all.

Instead, Claudia voiced how happy she was with their friendship, cueing Marley to nod again. “Me too!” Then Claudia suggested a girls’ day. “That would be totally fun!” Marley exclaimed. “I’ve never had a girls’ day before! I don’t even own nail polish, actually,” she laughed. Nails and makeup seemed like such a girls’ day type of thing to do, at least according to literally every movie she had seen. Marley had a small collection of tinted lip glosses, thanks to her gran, but that was the extent of her makeup collection. She had also painted her nails a grand total of once, which had involved first some creative struggling to get the lid off her mum’s paint can and then some more creative struggling to use grass tied around popsicle sticks as makeshift brushes and finally some creative groaning when her mum came back and saw what had happened to the paint that was apparently only supposed to be used on cars. But that was about to change! “But I bet we could borrow some fun colours from Holland,” she continued, “and oooh, we could even ask the house-elves to make us little treats! And we’ll have music, too, duh. Oh, already I can’t wait!” She clapped her hands excitedly.

When Claudia showed off her fingers, all that Marley could do was shrug a little, because that was weird. Not, like, bad-weird, just confusing-weird. Biting nails was a totally normal thing; Marley... more
