The train is leaving the station

When Marley agreed to the girls’ day, Claudia felt a small ripple of excitement. She tried to convince herself it was just because she was excited to delve further into the world of cosmetics, but if she were completely truthful, she would admit that she was looking forward to spending more time with Marley outside of the classroom. She didn't really know why - Marley talked too much and she was uninformed on so many important things that talking to her was always like an uphill struggle. Also she dressed peculiarly, ate strange food and was often rather loud - but there was nevertheless something compelling about having a female friend. Connor was great, and Claudia still preferred his company over anyone else’s, but she needed to have some friends who were girls. Marley was far from ideal, but she was nice. That was something.

“I own one nail polish,” Claudia confessed. “It's a very pale pink. My mother said I could wear it if I didn't -” she stopped suddenly. For over two years she had hidden her badly chewed nails from people at school. Sometimes she wore gloves, sometimes long sleeves, always she kept her fingers hidden. But she was much better now - her thighs were bruised black and blue from rubbing her knuckles against them instead, but Claudia was certain her nail-biting days were coming to an end. It seemed maybe, possibly okay to tell people about it now. Nobody needed to know, of course, it wasn't their business, but she wasn't sure how else to end that sentence. “If I stopped biting my nails,” Claudia finished after a slight pause. She held up her hands to show Marley the short, but neat and not-chewed fingernails she now possessed.

“I liked it, having painted nails,” Claudia said. “I've been thinking about going to Pearl Street to buy some more.” She had already been up to the mall once, but her nerves had only permitted her to step outside the bookshop for a few short minutes before she had returned to school. She was going to keep trying - she planned to go a little farther each time, until she felt confident enough to actually go into a store. It was not something she was especially comfortable doing, but she wanted the freedom to go out alone and buy things, so it had to be worth her effort and anxiety.

Claudia moved slower than Marley would’ve, but she was pretty sure her friend had never seen a boom box before yet alone used one, so that was understandable. And it was, weirdly, super interesting... more

When Claudia showed off her fingers, all that Marley could do was shrug a little, because that was weird. Not, like, bad-weird, just confusing-weird. Biting nails was a totally normal thing; Marley... more

Claudia was relatively certain that Holland would indeed let the girls borrow some of their nail polish, and that was certainly an option to consider. Still, Claudia did want to buy her own... more
