It's long gone

When Claudia showed off her fingers, all that Marley could do was shrug a little, because that was weird. Not, like, bad-weird, just confusing-weird. Biting nails was a totally normal thing; Marley did it herself whenever she had a hangnail (which was a lot of the time, thanks to Quidditch practice) because usually hangnails were something she noticed when it wasn’t possible for her to go back to her dorm and get clippers, such as in class, and then the only option was to either bite them off or use a cutting charm and she really didn’t think a cutting charm was a good idea. She didn’t have the best control over how deep to cut and her fingers weren’t the best place to practice that. Not that there was an especially good place for it, but still.

The last time Marley had used a cutting charm, she’d been trying to make holes in her jeans so that they looked cool and fashionable. Basically all of her clothes came secondhand, and she hadn’t found ripped jeans in any of the thrift shops she and her mum went to, and her mum wouldn’t let her buy them new from proper stores either because something about how it was a waste of money. The cutting charm had also been a waste ‘cause her jeans just turned into raggedy shorts instead, but at least it wasn’t a waste of money, and it wasn’t even really a waste - she still wore them! It was good to have raggedy clothes for when you were working outdoors. Getting her nice clothes dirty was no fun.

“Ooh, d’you think Pearl Street has a shop for that kinda thing? Because if it does, well that’s a great idea!” Marley exclaimed. “Like, I’m sure Holland wouldn’t mind us borrowing their nail polishes, but… oh, huh, maybe it’s just polish? Or polishes? Plurals are weird.” She made a face. Grammar was something she thought she was pretty good at most of the time, but also it was too much effort and sometimes it was better to just give it up rather than slow down the conversation - like she had literally just done - and also forgotten her train of thought, too, so that was great. “Anyways. We should go together and buy our own! That would be so fun! I’ve been up a few times already, but I’ve only bought, like, ice-cream, and I almost bought a CD from the music store once but I didn’t have enough coins with me so just wandered around listening to the street musicians instead,” she rattled off cheerfully. “Hey, what are you doing on the weekend? We could go scope it out! And, and, if we find nice ones, maybe we can get some snacks and hang out and paint right away!”
