Ruben Lundqvist
A good workout makes for a good view

To Ruben’s loud and vocal disappointment, Garen Tennant, the so-called ‘counsellor’ slash theatre director at RMI, had not allowed him to bring in a suitable partner for his martial arts demonstration. The school talent show was supposed to be about showing off the students’ talent; so what if he had to get someone from his non-school life to participate in it with him in order to present a solid routine? All he was asking was to get one of his buddies from Durmstrang to come in and act as his opponent in a proper glíma match. It was hardly his fault that RMI’s duelling club didn’t have a strictly physical opponent. And, sure, Ruben had briefly started his own version of a combat club via inviting his friends and/or moderately friendly acquaintances to join him for some of his workouts, but none of them were near his level. The closest was probably Rose, but she had barely learned to punch properly; he doubted he could train her to pull off a believable partnered routine and so hadn’t even bothered asking her. (Although she’d been acting weird for a while. Her bizarre decision to date Emmett probably had something to do with that. The guy wasn’t the limpest herring in the tin, but he was still an emotional moron, and being around that all the time was probably rubbing off on Rose. Unfortunate. He hated to see her brain and body going to waste with the likes of Emmett.)

His primary interest was of course in demonstrating his own uniquely talented skillset and instilling a sense of fear awe in all of the other students, their families, and whoever else was lame enough to attend a talent show. But Ruben had, very logically, pointed out to Tennant that not only would an equally-skilled partner allow him to give the best martial arts demonstration possible, but it would be also a hundred times safer than recruiting a partner from his incompetent classmates, who might be at risk of ending up with a concussion by the time they finished a full routine. Even though he left off the part about how some of his classmates could admittedly benefit from a concussion, Tennant had still turned him down. Ruben couldn’t recall what exactly the man had said, because as soon as it became apparent that he wasn’t going to get what he needed, the blonde had tuned him out, throwing in the odd grumble or headshake in order to appear like he was still paying attention. In reality, he was plotting.

Of course he would, in the end, accept the challenge of doing a (mostly) solo martial arts demonstration. It was going to be more of a performance now, because demonstrating properly required a partner that was actually alive and reacting to his movements, rather than the slowly swinging but otherwise fairly inanimate, roughly human-shaped punching bag that he had conjured and hung up in the theatre. Some of his routine would make use of the punching bag. Other parts, he had schemed a sort of improvisation route with temporary volunteer partners.

Well, his first partner hadn’t volunteered, but been ordered to assist him. That was Kalle-Anssi, of course. His half-brother was miniscule and couldn’t help with much, but he had grown up (at least outside of the school year) surrounded by Ruben and Dagny, both of whom practiced glíma almost religiously, so he at least had a sense of what was going down as it happened, and possibly could anticipate it, too, though Ruben hadn’t tested that out much yet. Really, he’d just told Kalle to join him, Kalle had agreed, and then Ruben had plotted out a short sequence where he could basically just sling his brother around and do partial body slides and that sort of thing. It would be totally safe. Or mostly safe. Kalle-Anssi was a little slow already, anyways, so whatever.

Moving along to other volunteers. Ruben had plans to ask his buddy EJ to join him for a short sparring bit, though he hadn’t gotten around to the asking part yet because he was still trying to convince him to help with boozing up the ‘community garden’ and his priorities were in order appropriately. But he was confident EJ would agree. Why wouldn’t he? They were two buff dudes who liked to punch. Now, on the opposite end of things was Danny, who didn’t seem to enjoy punching but had shown on at least one - okay, only one - occasion that he had more bite to him than at first glance. Ruben had an idea for how he could use that. Of course, Danny was signed up to do something called ‘emcee’, which from what he understood was basically just introducing the show and talking while the various performers got ready. Didn’t seem like a hard job, but Danny and Emmett were signed up to do it together. That presumably meant one of them could take a break. So if he couldn’t persuade Danny, he’d give Emmett a try… although he might wait until he was on stage to challenge the younger boy. Just for fun.

Allowing himself a moment’s breath to chuckle at the thought, Ruben slammed his heel into the punching bag once more.

The limp fake arms windmilled as the bag swung. Fan, that was satisfying, every time. Dancing on the balls of his toes, feeling that pleasant stretch down his quads, Ruben went in for a mock tackle: high kick with the left foot, sweep the right, slam the bag and sling his arm around where the midsection would be. He rode it out, the momentum carrying him in nearly a full circle around the punching bag, and then kicked off into a sideways roll. It was while rolling that he noticed he had an audience. Well, that was the reason why he had decided to practice on the theatre stage. Okay, the main reason was to get a feel for the space and the lights and stuff like that, but an audience was a bonus. Especially dressed as he was, although he couldn’t quite tell at this distance how… appropriate an audience he had. Hopefully not too young or too male. But he figured even if they fell in one or both categories, they could still appreciate his impeccable body. “Like what you see?” he called out to them, shooting a quick smirk their way before turning sharply to land another fist on the bag, his loose hair spinning overhead.
