Stranger things have happened

The older boy stopped trying to leave so that was good. He did want to play after all! “Okay um let me think,” Madeleine said, bouncing on the balls of her feet again. She had wanted to let him come up with something, but he asked her what she should be instead, so Madeleine looked him up and down and thought very hard about it.

They could play detective princess and prince, but Madeleine had noticed in a lot of stories that even when a girl was an expert at something, if there was a boy there too, he got to do more of the cool things. Madeleine thought that was unfair, so she did not want to play with a boy character very much. He could definitely be another detective princess; Kit played dress-up as a boy sometimes so this boy could be a girl for their game, Madeleine thought. Or maybe he could be the bad guy, like a dark wizard or something. He would have to be okay with losing if he was the bad guy, because in Madeleine’s games the good guys always won. But if he was the bad guy then they wouldn’t get to do a lot of the playing together, unless he was her detective partner and then he betrayed her by turning out to have been the bad guy all along.

Madeleine put Jennyanydots on the counter where the actors and actresses got their makeup done during shows. The puffskein made a little whirring chirping sound, which Madeleine knew meant that she was happy. Now that she had a couple of ideas, Madeleine started grabbing different costume pieces off of the racks and putting them together into outfits on the makeup counter near Jennyanydots.

“It’s okay,” she confided, in case the boy was worried about all the stuff she was taking out, “I know the house elves and if I ask nicely they’ll help me clean up.” Dad said that if she could help it, she shouldn’t leave all the cleaning to the house elves. It wasn’t fair to make a big mess and make more work for them. But Kizzy, who was the head house-elf, had told her that they didn’t mind cleaning, so Madeleine’s compromise was to do as much of the cleaning up as she could first and then ask for help. That way the house elves only had a little bit to do, and Madeleine would hug them and say “thank you very very much” so they knew she wasn’t taking it for granted.

She put together a detective princess outfit (the shimmery skirt he had been looking at earlier, a blouse with a flower pattern, and a trilby hat) and a bad guy outfit (a black cape and boots). There were some more costume pieces that looked fun so she also made outfits for a rich person who was reporting the crime (opera gloves, a fake fur stole, and lavender high heels), a police officer outfit (a suit jacket, a vest, a badge, and a long wig). As she was trying to choose an accessory to go with the bad guy outfit, Madeleine found the trenchcoat she had come to find in the first place and put it on. The magic on the coat made it shrink to be the right size for her.

“Done!” she sang out, adding a cane to the pile of stuff she had picked out for the bad guy. Madeleine beckoned for the boy to come closer to check out what she had put together. “Okay so here were some ideas I had, but if you want you can mix and match and we’ll figure out your character after, and then we can play.”
