He was going to play along! Madeleine bounced on the balls of her feet. “Daisy is a really good princess name,” she said encouragingly. Daisy must just be his princess name, because who ever heard of a boy named Daisy. Madeleine thought it was a very cute name, but she would go with something really long and fancy if she was picking a princess name. Like Genevieve or Seraphina or Euphemia, names that normal, non-princess people couldn't really have because it would be too weird. She giggled. “It’s funny that you don’t like flowers and your name is Daisy, like a flower. But okay, we can find something with no flowers,” Madeleine said.

She trotted obligingly over to the clothing rack. The sections of the rack were sorted by item type (Marissa’s friend Holland was the costume designer for RMI’s theater and was really organized about it), so it was easy to find all the shirts. To be honest Dade didn’t really need an extra shirt because the hat and the sparkly skirt were the two most important parts, but finding him a different shirt sounded fun. There was a white blouse that looked kind of like Madeleine’s inside a pink jacket, which she removed and brought back to the counter before going back to look some more.

Daisy (she was just going to call him that now) looked like he was probably around Drew’s age. “Do you know my brother? His name is Drew Tennant. Well actually his name is Andrew but we all just call him Drew.” Madeleine was pretty sure that Drew hadn’t switched to using his full name now that he was a first year. All the staff and everyone already knew him as Drew. “He’s a first year Cetus. And my cousin Kit is a first year Lyra. Oh, do you know Kit? Her real name is Katherine Kendrick. She has really bright red hair.” Madeleine considered mentioning that Drew looked a little bit like her except that he was half black, but then she would probably have to explain that they looked so different because they had different biodads, and that was getting way off topic of the dress-up game.

Dad was the head of Lyra and Aaron-Dad was the head of Cetus, so it was cool that they were all together. Madeleine wasn’t sure what she would be when she got to be a student at RMI. She thought maybe Draco sounded nice, or Lyra, like Dad and Kit. No one else in her family had been a Draco but Madeleine liked to read and that seemed like a very Draco thing. She didn’t think she wanted to be an Aquila even though she liked Mr. Rob very much and her cousin Marissa and Marissa’s best friend Rose were both Aquilas too. But a lot of the Aquilas were kind of loud and sometimes pranks weren’t funny, they were just mean.

Careful not to pick any shirts with flowers, Madeleine chose a few more for Daisy. Some of them had ruffles and one had long flowy princessy sleeves, which Madeleine liked quite a lot. “Kit and Drew used to play dress-up and stuff with me before they were students, but now they’re busy so they don’t have as much time to play.” Marissa would play with her sometimes when she was babysitting, but it wasn’t the same as with Drew and Kit. It made Madeleine a little bit sad sometimes that she wasn’t the same age as them. Madeleine was the youngest person in her whole family, even counting Aunt Cara’s kids Gia and Sophia, and that felt unfair. It wasn’t Madeleine’s fault she was born a couple years later! Of course she couldn’t be the same exact age as Drew because Jessie was already pregnant with Drew that year, unless they had been twins, which would have been really cool. Dad’s friend Addi had a twin brother and they were even closer than normal brothers and sisters were.

  • Okay well the thing that Dade had been kind of hoping wouldn’t happen had gone ahead and happened. Madeleine wanted him to be a ‘detective princess’ like she was, and she clearly had missed any memos ... more
