This had been a perfect day. Marissa could hardly believe her luck. It was like Felix Felices had been inserted directly into her veins and made her entire body feel giddy and warm. Okay, that was probably the alcohol. More than probably. She and Myffi stayed out on the Pitch for a while, drinking and kissing and talking. It had been so nice. With alcohol warming her stomach, kisses tingling her lips, and a college acceptance in her hands, she couldn’t possibly feel more like the old Marissa.

After the two of them decided it was time to call it a day, they left the Pitch and parted ways. Marissa hoped they could do a little more of this – the drinking, kissing, or both – again some time. She didn’t have much of her last term at Rocky Mountain International left. This certainly wouldn’t be a bad way to spend it.

She made her way to Aquila with more pep in her step than she’d had in a long time. Even her jump into the commons had more of a bounce to it than usual. That may have been because she was tipsy enough to have less control over her balance than intended, but she also just felt happy. Her footsteps click, click, clicked up the stairs to her room and she opened the door. “Rose?”

Her roommate wasn’t there yet. Huh. Marissa shrugged off her green shirt and changed into a black tank top. She traded her skinny jeans for cute but baggy pajama pants. She left the acceptance letter on her bed as she put away her dirty clothes and tidied up any mess of hers that she’d forgotten to deal with over the past couple of days. Man, feeling good made her so much more productive. This was much better than being the Marissa who slept all the time and avoided her room.

When she started to contemplate taking a shower, the door opened and closed. Marissa turned with a bright grin, nearly falling over from spinning around too fast. “Rose!” She exclaimed. She snatched the letter from her bed and jumped onto Rose’s, holding out the paper for her to take. “Look, check it out! I got into Adams!” She beamed. “I know it’s not impressive like Harvard or Yale, but I did it, I got in somewhere! So maybe the other schools are gonna accept me too. Maybe Meredith is my only rejection.”

She bounced up and down on her knees, giggling a little. “Oh, Myffi helped me celebrate! We drank a little bit – shhh, don’t tell – and,” she lowered her voice, “We made out. This has been, like, the best day.”

What the pineapple was wrong with Marissa? She should know that Rose didn’t care about Marissa kissing people. As far as Rose was concerned, Marissa could go up to Pearl Street and hang out in a bar... more
