We were born to entertain

Marissa and Rose never fought. That wasn’t how their friendship worked. They became fast friends, partially because that was just how Marissa worked. As a child, if she’d ever done sleepaway camp or spent the night with elementary school friends, she was determined to make the best friends she could. Being anything less than best friends forever was not an option.

So, yes, the two of them never fought, but they’d also never had a year like this. The red-head always felt she could tell Rose everything until now. They’d never had secrets, they’d never avoided each other, and they’d never made each other feel badly. Never, never, never. She supposed there must be a first time for everything; it just sucked that all the nevers were happening all at once.

“You clearly care,” Marissa cut in quietly. She didn’t understand Rose’s problem. Was she upset or defensive about Marissa’s tendency to kiss people now that she was dating Emmett? She’d never try to do things with someone who was in a monogamous relationship, and Emmett was crazy about the other Aquila. He’d never cheat on Rose.

Then Rose said something about transfers, causing Marissa to let out a confused and uncomfortable laugh. Before she could protest, Rose said something else, and the guilt hit her like a punch to the stomach. Her green eyes stung with an emotion she tipsily couldn’t identify or control.

Not realizing she’d misheard Rose - who hadn’t accused her of already kissing Russell but that she might kiss him next - Marissa bit her bottom lip and tugged anxiously on one of her curls. How did Rose know? “See, I knew you’d react like this. What does it matter that I kissed Russell? He’s really sweet and he’s never done anything to you. I don’t get what your problem is.”
