Remington had been the first one to find Dade after he had retreated to the secret passageways, which was good. Remington was Dade’s first real friend ever and she understood that sometimes it wasn’t important to talk. Initially, she had asked what was wrong but when Dade made it clear he didn’t want to talk, Remington had been okay with just hanging out for awhile. She read her book. Dade drew designs in the dust on the floor where he was sitting. It was quiet. It was nice.

Once Claudia had left Mr. Tennant’s office, Dade hadn’t been able to move for a little while. There was just too much going on and he didn’t know how to handle it. After he had sat there for a little while and Drew’s dad had just started doing paperwork, Dade had left quietly. He had detention and had lost some points for Cetus, which all-in-all probably wasn’t a bad shake for accidentally almost frying a student, even if she absolutely deserved it. All of his suspicions about Claudia had been confirmed when she admitted to having looked in Drew’s notebook. Dade knew it. Claudia was sneaking around and learning things about them, probably so she could keep hexing people until they were too afraid of her to do anything.

Keeping an eye out for Claudia, Dade had disappeared into the passageways as soon as he could and found one of his more frequented corners to sit down in, knees against his chest, head down. And then after awhile, Remington had come. And that was good.

Dade didn’t know how long he and his friend had been sitting there when Drew showed up, explaining that his dad had told him what happened, and asking if Dade was okay. There was a weird shiver in Dade’s stomach as he nodded and returned to drawing in the dust. Drew sat next to him. Dade was glad to have them both there with him, even if he didn’t want to talk about what happened. He was extra glad to have Kit not there.

It was another little while before it was pointed out that they were almost late for curfew; given the day’s events, it probably wasn’t the best idea to break more rules. Dade was resistant to going back to Cetus. He was pretty sure that Connor knew about what had happened by now, and he was even more sure that Connor was going to take Claudia’s side. Plus, Claudia was a giant liar who probably made it sound like it had been worse than it actually was. He had planned to sleep in the passageways and decide what to do in the morning but Drew promised that he’d sleep over with Dade, which made the flutter in his stomach happen again. Remington headed off to Draco as the two boys made their way to Cetus. It was late, so there were few other students in the hallways - perfectly fine by Dade.

Through the door to Cetus and quickly through the commons, Dade came to a screeching halt in front of the stairs to the boys’ side of the dormitories, feeling anxious and more than a little nauseous. What if the stairs messed up again for him tonight? What if Claudia had seen them mess up and that was how she knew there was something wrong with him? What if she tattled on him to Drew’s dad, or worse, the Headmaster? He gritted his teeth and shut his eyes tightly. He didn’t want to have to deal with this too.
