Part-time existence sounds stressful

Drew held Dade’s hand as they went up the stairs and Dade worked on trying to breathe and walk at the same time. There was just so much going on that the very last thing he wanted was for the stairs to drop him into the Headmaster’s office. It seemed like everyone liked the Headmaster, but he never believed Dade that he wasn’t trying to get into the girls’ dorms. Well, Rose didn’t like him so much. Something about him getting Holland and Maverick in trouble for the stairs messing up. That hadn’t seemed like something Holland and Maverick would do, at least in Dade’s point of view, and the stairs had been messing up for ages with him and the Headmaster wouldn’t even believe it. It was really frustrating and really not what he needed right now, but the stairs seemed to think that because he and Drew were holding hands everything was okay, and the two Ceti reached the upper landing without a problem. Dade felt a sweeping sense of relief, and then a moment of panic.

They would have to pass Connor’s door in order to get to Dade’s room. But Drew made sure that he was in between Dade and Connor’s door, and he put his hand on his wand. Dade did too. Connor’s door was open a bit and he could see his brother, but he was focused on doing something and didn’t notice the younger students pass his room.

Dade went into his room when Drew went into his, and quickly changed into his pyjamas. He typically wore a loose t-shirt and black pyjama bottoms to bed. They were the only t-shirts he had, and he liked them. He was really sick of dressing like Connor, but didn’t really know how to fix it. And since he knew without a doubt that Connor would take Claudia’s side in this, Dade wanted to look like his brother even less than he already had. It was a relief to change. It was also a relief to know that for the moment, Connor wasn’t paying attention to whether Dade was in his room or not. And Claudia couldn’t get up here, probably. So that was fine.

Realizing suddenly that he didn’t want to look like a baby, Dade got up and carefully tucked his stuffed bear into the bottom of his trunk. His hand brushed against the gift Holland had given him as he nestled the beat into a corner and his heart started to beat faster. Anxiously, he shoved the miscellaneous items that accumulated in his trunk (a closed container of beetle eyes, some parchment, extra quills, a few books) over the bear and the - other thing. Then he sealed the trunk with a locking spell, just in case. Drew probably wouldn’t try and look in his things. But what if he did? Dade didn’t want to take chances.

And then Drew showed up with his things and set them up on the floor next to Dade’s bed. Dade kind of felt like he should be the one sleeping on the floor since Drew was doing him a favor, but thought it might be awkward to offer. He had never really had a sleepover before. He’d had roommates, but that was different (and also terrible).

“It’s better,” Dade said. He still sounded a little anxious, he knew, but he felt like he could talk again, now that he was in his room with Drew. “I just - I don’t want to run into Claudia. She’ll do something to me. Or Connor.” He wasn’t sure what his brother would do. Before coming to RMI, Dade hadn’t fought with his brother often. When they were younger and argued over toys, Dade usually gave up the fight and sulked rather than actually engaging with Connor. Rose was very aggressive about winning fights, but again - before RMI, she hadn’t argued much with her brothers. Almost never with Dade. But after Connor started being friends with Claudia, Rose had been less and less close with him. Dade used to write Rose once a week, but now they were in the same school they didn’t interact much at all. Sometimes he’d eat lunch with her or something, but Rose was always really busy and their schedules didn’t line up.

Rose. He should tell Rose. She would help him.

“I know Connor is going to try and come here,” Dade said after a moment’s pause. “I don’t want him to yell at me,” he added, voice wavering a little bit.
