Journalism was kind of Drew’s thing, aside from music, and Dade couldn’t really say he understood. He and Remington were much more interested in doing research about spells and practising the spells and Kit was actually weirdly good at crafting for someone as chronically hyperactive as she was. But Drew’s thing was journalism, and it shouldn’t have surprised Dade that Drew wanted to ask more questions. It was like Drew knew Dade wasn’t telling him everything. Dade sat down on his bed and played with the corner of his pillowcase. He didn’t know what to say, and he was definitely feeling much more uncomfortable than he had been a second ago. Actually - defensive was probably a better word. He felt like he wanted to hex the person asking him the questions he was being asked. But he also knew he didn’t want to hex Drew, so he didn’t.

Why had he known that Claudia was following him and was going to hurt him? Dade wasn’t sure exactly, but he knew it. He just did. But now Drew wanted him to explain and it felt like Drew didn’t believe him anymore, and that made Dade more uncomfortable and like he wanted to fold in on himself and turn into a little ball and never talk to anyone ever again. If Drew didn’t believe him - Drew, who had been randomly attacked by Connor last year - Dade didn’t know who would, aside from maybe Remington. And that meant the Claudia was just going to bide her time and get him later, and nobody would believe him until something actually happened. It was bad. Really bad. So that was a thing. What was Dade supposed to do? He felt like there was static running along the back of his neck.

“I just knew, okay?” Dade sounded annoyed and probably a little panicky now. He couldn’t tell Drew why he was like Holland. Dade didn’t even know if he was like Holland, really. They were really pretty and always wore really good clothes, and they had a look that was very clearly neither male or female. Dade couldn’t tell what they had started out as, before they were a nonbinary. On the other hand, Dade mostly wore the clothes that Connor wore, which were all boring boy clothes. And his voice was starting to get deeper. Not by a whole lot, but some, and it made him uncomfortable. He couldn’t be like Holland. But there was something wrong with him, maybe something a little different but a little bit the same. Dade wasn’t sure what was going on. How was he supposed to explain what was going on, even if he did know what was going on?

Well. Sometimes he felt like he knew things. Sometimes he didn’t. It was all a lot and he didn’t want to deal with it right now. He definitely didn’t want to deal with it right now. Drew would probably drop it, but Dade wanted him to believe him about Claudia. “Connor told her something. That wasn’t true,” he added quickly. That was how Claudia had found out, right? It had to be Connor. Connor had to have found out somehow. Dade didn’t think he’d been back to Rose’s room since the last time he’d gotten caught. “And now she wants to hex me too.”

  • Well do you have a solution? - Drew, Fri May 4 16:55
Drew nodded and listened to Dade explain it. Drew was a good listener. When Kit was your best friend, you got used to listening, because Kit never stopped talking. Also because of Kit, Drew was... more

      • “Okay,” Drew said simply, like that was all he needed to know, because it was. He could tell Dade was starting to get upset and he didn’t want that. In fact Drew was surprised by how many questions... more
