Dade Farnon
It's really apparent I have no other friends [Drew]

Dade hadn’t seen Drew yet since returning to school (and he hadn’t seen Connor or Claudia either, which was great). But he had a lot of things to tell Drew. He just didn’t want Huburt there. In order to ensure that Drew’s obnoxious roommate wasn’t around, Dade had waited with his door open just a crack, peering out it every time he heard footsteps. It took longer than he would have liked. Dade was impatient. Finally, though, Huburt went down the stairs of the boys’ dorm and Dade was free to slip out of his room and quickly (but quietly) head towards Drew’s room. He was in the sort of clothes you would expect someone to be in when they were lurking in their room - socks, sweatpants, and a sleep shirt - but he really did want to show Drew the outfit that Holland helped him pick out. Just - not now.

It was very unlikely that Drew was going to freak out about anything Dade was going to tell him, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t nervous. Drew had been the one, at the beginning of the new term, who had said things about gender. It hadn’t been Dade. So now that Dade had something to share - Drew was a safe bet, right?

Quietly, Dade knocked on Drew’s door. It seemed like forever and a half until Drew opened it, but soon Dade was awkwardly standing inside Drew’s room instead of awkwardly standing outside of it. He took a deep breath.

The advice Jenna had given him was pretty simple. She had suggested asking a small group of friends to use his new name and different pronouns, just privately for a little while. That way, if Dade decided he wasn’t ready to tell people about things, or if he wanted to change his name again, or if anything else went weird or wrong, it wouldn’t be the entire school’s business. Admittedly, Dade wasn’t sure who he was going to tell aside from Drew. Anssi maybe? The kid was kind of dumb but better at keeping his mouth shut than Kit, who had no demonstrated ability to censor herself whatsoever. If Remington hadn’t turned into Claudia’s evil crony, Dade would have definitely included her, but she had chosen her side. Obviously he was going to tell Madeleine, but Madeleine was used to Dade’s princess names changing.

“I picked a new name,” Dade blurted out, then flushed with embarrassment. That was not the first thing he had wanted to say. “I mean. What I meant was. I met some of Holland’s friends and one of them - she goes to MIT like Holland and is transgender like Holland but not exactly like Holland I mean,” somehow this stream of words was not going the way Dade had intended, quite possibly because the typically laconic third-year had little practise in managing lots of words t once, “She’s a girl, not a nonbinary like Holland, but she used to be a boy and she said - well she called me an egg first and then she said a lot of things but,” Dade took a deep breath, “one of the things she said is that you were right and that the sooner I start trying to be a girl the easier it will be and,” another deep breath, “if it’s all right I’d like you to call me Dakota now but only in private.” It was hard to tell if Dade looked as flushed as he did because he hadn’t been breathing as much as he had been talking or because he was embarrassed.

Anxiously, he awaited Drew’s response.

Somehow, Drew’s response was both entirely anticlimactic and absolutely thrilling at the same time. The first part - the ‘yeah’ - was probably exactly what Dade should have expected from Drew. His... more

Drew actually had about a thousand other questions about this, but he was pretty sure that it wasn’t any of his business if Dade was going to start dressing like a girl now. Since Dade had said he... more

“You know,” Drew said, “I really don’t know.” It was probably better for Kit to know less, if he was being honest. Like, if all she knew was that she should called Dade ‘Dakota’ now around Drew and... more

Well huh, maybe Drew didn’t have the answers to all Kit-related questions. Maybe it was a little unfair, but Dade had kind of considered his friend to be - well, it was kind of like Kit was a pet.... more
