I wonder how that happened

Christmas had been extra interesting this year because Dade and Rose had come with the Kendricks. Dad always liked having more people around for the holidays, so no one was surprised by his “the more the merrier!” attitude. Drew was equally unsurprised by the fact that Tennant-McKindy-Kendrick-Embers Christmas had seemed a little overwhelming for both of the newcomers. There were just—things that Drew’s family did, like Christmas singalongs, that Drew was pretty sure the Farnon family would never do in a million years. At least he sure couldn’t imagine Connor shaking jingle bells and singing “Frosty the Snowman” while Mr. Farnon played the guitar.

Since they were there, Rose and Dade were family, so they got to join in the present stuff too. Dad and Aaron had given both Farnons books—Rose had gotten some obscure Charms text (Drew was pretty sure Aaron had picked it out), and Dade had gotten a defensive magic book different from the one Drew’s parents had gotten him. Drew didn’t know whether that was on purpose so that they could share books, but it was really convenient. Drew would’ve been happy to go in together with Madeleine on Dade’s gift, like they had for the note-taking stationery (complete with self-inking quill and) for Rose, but Madeleine had insisted she was going to get Dade her own present so Drew was on his own. He’d given Dade a notepad that had templates for fill-in-the-blank passive aggressive notes. He’d seen one that had fill-in-the-blank apology notes, which probably would have been more useful for Dade because the other Cetus was terrible at apologies (as in Drew couldn’t remember a time when Dade had apologized for something), but Drew thought that calling attention to that was not in the Christmas spirit, so he’d gone with the funny one instead. (Madeleine had given Dade a hair comb tiara with little rhinestones all over it. Drew was happy to not split the credit for that after all.)

The only person who knocked on Drew’s dorm room door was Dade (except for that one time it had been Connor. Drew had yet to see anything interesting come out of that, even though Remy had confirmed there wasn’t an assignment like Connor had described, so hmmm), so Drew wasn’t surprised when soon after everyone was back in school, there was a knock at the door and it was Dade. He invited the other third-year in (“Hey, happy new year!”) and shut the door.

And then Dade started talking.

Drew didn’t think he’d ever heard Dade talk so much all at once. It wasn’t just that he was talking so much, and for so long—it was that Dade was almost tripping over himself in his explanation, like he couldn’t decide which thing to say next because he was so excited about each thing he was saying. That got Drew’s attention more than anything, because Dade never talked like that, even when they were talking about something he was really interested in like a new spell they’d researched.

And it was exciting, and kind of a relief. “Yeah,” Drew agreed immediately. Of course he could use a new name if that was what his friend wanted. Drew knew it wasn’t actually the same as how his friends all called him ‘Drew’ instead of ‘Andrew,’ because this wasn‘t really just a nickname, but it felt similar. “Okay. Sure thing, Dakota.” Using a different name for Dade when he still looked the same as he always had felt kind of weird, but Drew figured he would get used to it. Sort of. The hardest thing would probably be switching between ‘Dade’ and ‘Dakota’ when there were other people around versus when there weren’t.

  • Dade hadn’t seen Drew yet since returning to school (and he hadn’t seen Connor or Claudia either, which was great). But he had a lot of things to tell Drew. He just didn’t want Huburt there. In order ... more

      • Haven't the foggiest - Dade , Wed Sep 26 17:55
Somehow, Drew’s response was both entirely anticlimactic and absolutely thrilling at the same time. The first part - the ‘yeah’ - was probably exactly what Dade should have expected from Drew. His... more

Drew actually had about a thousand other questions about this, but he was pretty sure that it wasn’t any of his business if Dade was going to start dressing like a girl now. Since Dade had said he... more

There were a lot of things that Dade didn’t understand about Drew’s relationship with his cousin, but just the name ‘Kit’ encompassed a lot of those. He had some serious questions about what Drew was ... more

“You know,” Drew said, “I really don’t know.” It was probably better for Kit to know less, if he was being honest. Like, if all she knew was that she should called Dade ‘Dakota’ now around Drew and... more

Well huh, maybe Drew didn’t have the answers to all Kit-related questions. Maybe it was a little unfair, but Dade had kind of considered his friend to be - well, it was kind of like Kit was a pet.... more

Wait. Madeleine knew? Dakota had told Madeleine , Drew’s kid sister, about being trans before telling Drew, who was (Drew was pretty sure) basically her best friend? Drew had figured Dade wasn’t... more
