I’ll get the tarot deck

“You know,” Drew said, “I really don’t know.” It was probably better for Kit to know less, if he was being honest. Like, if all she knew was that she should called Dade ‘Dakota’ now around Drew and Anssi, that would probably be a lot safer than explaining to her that Dade was going to start being a girl. Especially if Dade Dakota didn’t switch all at once, which sounded to Drew like what was happening. Telling Kit everything that was going on sounded like the perfect way to create a misunderstanding. Something about being such a literal, black-and-white person, coupled with her… interesting logic, made her prone to misunderstandings.

Drew wasn’t sure if Kit knew about trans people. Like, she definitely knew Holland existed because they were friends with Marissa. But based on the whole Danny-is-a-lesbian thing Drew felt it safe to say that Kit didn’t have a firm grasp on the concept. Drew didn’t know what dating Holland would make Danny. He wasn’t straight, obviously, because Holland wasn’t a girl, but he wasn’t gay because he’d dated Marissa, and Holland wasn’t a boy anyway. But bisexual didn’t seem like the right word either (he was pretty sure that that was what Dad was because Drew could remember his dad going on dates with women when Drew was a kid, before Madeleine happened and he and Aaron got together. And he was pretty sure Aaron was that too because Aunt Jessie and Aunt Cara existed) and that was the only other orientation word that Drew knew. Maybe there were other words that Drew didn’t know about because they didn’t really apply to him or anyone he was close to.

Besides Kit and Anssi, there was someone else who Dakota could tell. Someone who would not be so upset once she knew what was going on, and then maybe things would go back to normal. Of course, the odds of Dade Dakota telling Remington everything were about the same as the odds of Professor Rob doing the can-can on the table at breakfast. Drew did want to bring it up eventually, but this right now kinda felt like Dakota’s moment. He decided not to mention Remington just yet. That seemed like a way to guarantee some friction. Maybe they could talk about this later when the Dade-is-a-girl-now thing was less new.

Anyway, maybe they could outsource the Kit problem. “I can help. Or maybe we can get Marissa or Mads to explain it to her,” he joked. Drew had no idea whether his little sister knew about transgender people, but she was like, militantly accepting and good at using small, clear words. Also Madeleine had an embarrassingly obvious crush on Dade (like, seriously, how could everyone not tell?) and would probably do anything her favorite dress-up partner asked her to do.

Oh, hey. That made more sense now. “Are you gonna tell Madeleine?” Drew asked cautiously. He was pretty sure Dade and Madeleine were still friends (it was impossible to stop being friends with Madeleine) and she would definitely want to know.

  • Let me grab my crystal ball - Dade, Sun Sep 30 11:40
There were a lot of things that Dade didn’t understand about Drew’s relationship with his cousin, but just the name ‘Kit’ encompassed a lot of those. He had some serious questions about what Drew was ... more

Well huh, maybe Drew didn’t have the answers to all Kit-related questions. Maybe it was a little unfair, but Dade had kind of considered his friend to be - well, it was kind of like Kit was a pet.... more
        • I think you have to draw first - Drew, Sun Oct 21 22:49
Wait. Madeleine knew? Dakota had told Madeleine , Drew’s kid sister, about being trans before telling Drew, who was (Drew was pretty sure) basically her best friend? Drew had figured Dade wasn’t... more
