I guess I should check with it first

Drew made a skeptical face. No, you didn’t act that blunt and weird if you weren’t being rude. Maybe the other Cetus was just bad at social things and he hadn’t realized that the right answers for that question were either “yes,” “no, sorry,” and “maybe later?” Like, that was it. Demanding to know why the other person wanted to play a game with you was not a good way to respond to that question.

“Well, the way you asked kinda implied I don’t have friends. So maybe work on phrasing? But okay,” Drew finished, shrugging. He couldn’t help adding, rhetorically, “If ‘normal’ people don’t invite other people to have fun with them, then how do they make friends?” But he didn’t really want to have an argument, because this just wasn’t worth getting all worked up over.

It was hard to get Drew super upset about anything—Dad said he was “really level-headed”—because, like, that didn’t help. If it wasn’t an emergency there was no reason to panic, and if there was a real emergency then panicking wouldn’t solve anything, so you shouldn’t panic either. A lot of the time, the kind of things that other people got all freaked out about weren’t big problems. Not that Drew thought they were silly for getting upset when small things went wrong—emotions were a thing and not everyone dealt with them the same way, and it did suck when anything went wrong no matter how little it was—he could just go with the flow more easily than most people.

Anyway it’d be dumb to have this argument, because Drew just wanted someone to play a game with, and he still wasn’t opposed to it being this guy. Also it was his birthday and he was definitely not feeling like arguing about phrasing. “Anyway, I’m Drew Tennant. Apparently-abnormal person who has friends but would still play a game with you, if you wanna.”

Wait, what? “I’m not being rude,” Dade protested, a little taken aback. He hadn’t been rude, he’d just been asking something simple. It wasn’t like it was a weird question to ask, especially since... more

When the kid in front of him told him to work on his phrasing, Dade glared at him some more. His phrasing was perfectly fine, it was the kid in front of him who needed to work on his ability to... more

“I like Kit too,” Drew agreed, laughing. “She’s my best friend.” That didn’t mean she wasn’t ‘a bit much.’ She could be annoying, too, but it was the kind of annoying that you just let happen because ... more
