Drew moved a knight and Dade moved another pawn. Moving a knight seemed to Dade to be kind of a weird move, but whatever. Maybe Drew wasn’t very good at chess and he’d just wanted to do something with someone, even if that someone was a random person that happened to be in his House. Dade considered this a dangerous plan and in his opinion Drew should be grateful to him for preventing something terrible like Huburt Park from happening. Admittedly, Huburt was probably not the game-playing type but he was nasty and Dade couldn’t envision anyone not hating him.

Explaining why his mum didn’t want him seemed to come easily to Drew, which made sense to Dade when the other boy said that his father had just wanted him more than his mum had. It still was weird that Drew’s mum (who he called by her first name, which was also odd) was the daughter of the person Drew’s dad was apparently married to, but when Dade thought about it he supposed that it was actually quite normal to have your grandparents look after you. He didn’t have much of a relationship with his grandparents on either side; his mum’s parents had come by maybe twice in the past twelve years, and although there were yearly Christmas visits to his father’s parents they weren’t really interested in being involved in his life outside of that. They liked Connor and sometimes sent him things via owl post, but never to Dade or Rose. Admittedly, that might have been because Rose was temperamental and sometimes threw things when she was angry.

“What’s Jessie like?” Dade decided to ask, curious. He supposed that since Drew used her first name instead of calling her his mum, he must use the word for someone else. Except he’d used Professor McKindy’s name too, and he’d definitely called Mr. Tennant ‘Dad’. This was confusing.

“I like Kit too,” Drew agreed, laughing. “She’s my best friend.” That didn’t mean she wasn’t ‘a bit much.’ She could be annoying, too, but it was the kind of annoying that you just let happen because ... more
