You're always confused though.

A thought occurred to him: Russell's hair didn't look like it's usual disaster. Huh. Mave was actually kinda surprised he hadn't noticed earlier, but he supposed he was too occupied by being blinded by the outfit below. God, the kid was bad at matching. But credit where credit was due, his hair marked major progress on the path to not embarrassing himself.

"Yup, Magic as a force," he confirmed, glad to hear that Russell had at least started on it. "I haven't gotten anywhere on it and was hoping I could maybe see what you got, just to try to get some ideas flowing?" Maverick did not consider this cheating - whatever Russell's thesis was, he'd probably take a different approach, because he was very good at disagreeing with people - although if it was cheating, he honestly wasn't bothered by it. School was stupid and more about learning how to write an essay and how to memorize than actually learning the material. Magical school was admittedly less offensive than Muggle in that regard, but still. Knowing how magic could be construed as a force and other such physics mumbo jumbo didn't make him any better at casting spells. It just filled up his brain with stuff he didn't need to know.

"Nice hair, by the way," he commented, a bit distracted by it now that he noticed it. Maverick was not particularly attracted to one sex or gender over another, but he did find long hair attractive (which led to generally being pulled more toward girls just because of social norms), and now that Russell's hair was less of a disaster, it did well to flatter.
