Let's get this straightened out [Connor]
Mon Nov 13, 2017 15:51

Never had a class been so enlightening, and Claudia was most definitely not referencing the Lurlina faeries she had eventually helped to collect back into their cages. She had been told that she was hated, she had cried where most of the school had the potential to see her (she suspected they hadn’t, in fact, because most students had taken rapidly to the woodlands surrounding the outdoor classroom, and Marley had undoubtedly been drawing the majority of any attention that had strayed in their direction, anyway), and she had discovered that Connor had lied either to her, or to Marley, or to both of them. For her own dignity, Claudia believed and wished that Connor had not deceived her, yet why in Merlin’s good name would Marley say that Connor had agreed to date her if that had not happened?

Even though she had left the class on reasonable terms with Marley, and made plans to meet up with her again later, Claudia had since been gradually brewing a volatile concoction of doubt and frustration, which by now had developed into a frenzied tangle of mistrust, personal insecurity, and an overwhelming desire to hide under her duvet and never again emerge. For better or for worse, that familiar feeling was also battling with a much less-often experienced sensation: blame. This whole mess was partially her fault, and she couldn’t deny that to herself, no matter how vehemently she might attempt to deny it to anyone else, but she was not alone in this catastrophe. Claudia was absolutely certain that the damage she had inflicted might have been contained if Connor had not added his own injuries.

Traditionally she loathed confrontation. The third year would much rather lose out than fight for her share, and a common peace was by all means preferable to a common understanding. There were some exceptions to this, naturally, and Connor was one of them today. Until she knew what he had said to Marley, and why, she could not begin to fix this. She didn’t know how to feel about Connor just now, and there was only one way to find out.

Directly from class, having ascertained that Connor hadn’t even been there (that would usually cause her some concern for his health, but she found herself being uncharacteristically unsympathetic in this instance), Claudia sought him out. She elected to first try the commonroom, and found him there instantly - looking, she noted with derisive disbelief, perfectly healthy. “I have just had a particularly unpleasant experience,” she began, her voice quiet and tone level but tinged with mild accusation as she placed herself opposite him, trying her best not to tremble in the fitted, grey knit dress she had elected to wear that day (much to her current chagrin, because any slight movement in it might plausibly be visible. Her heart was beating wildly enough that it might even be seen hammering away beneath her clothes).

“I have had an intensive argument with Marley Chapman” - Oh no her throat was trying to stop her from breathing and talking at the same time again. Why would it choose to do that now? - “who has informed me that you agreed to go on a date with her, and that you said it was nice of her to ask.” She didn’t know if she was more sad or mad or humiliated, but Claudia felt her eyes welling once more with hot tears. This was as bad as hearing those boys laughing about her all over again. She wasn’t even aware that her fists were clenched until her palms started to sting.
