I've never been one for optimism

Although Connor had been concerned that Claudia would take his comments about Marley badly, it seemed as though his friend understood, at least partially, the things Marley was capable of. It did not seem to come as a surprise to Claudia that Marley had been tormenting Connor for what seemed like ages, although Connor was certain that if Claudia had actually known about the situation she would have said something to the monster she happened to be friends with. Of course, Claudia would have approached the situation gently and with tact, because she understood the appropriate ways to communicate with others; it was one of the reasons Connor found it so soothing to be around her at most times. Unfortunately, today was not most times, but that, too, was Marley’s fault entirely.

When Claudia explained Marley’s twisted mind, Connor realized with a sinking feeling that it had, perhaps, been his penchant for politeness that had exacerbated the situation. But how was he supposed to have known that Marley needed to be bluntly confronted with reality before accepting it? Although once he had put it that way, Connor began to think he should have considered that as a problem in the first place. After all, the majority of his complaints with Marley, aside from the time she’d tried to kill him, were rooted in her inability to understand the constructs of proper society. Had she really taken his politeness as encouragement? That seemed ridiculous - he had clearly been exhibiting a lack of interest in further association with her. Connor had not spent his time initiating conversations or working with her in class. In fact, he had done the very opposite, dodging Marley at every opportunity and only begrudgingly coexisting with her when dodging wasn’t an option. Surely even for someone like that, avoidance was a beacon of disinterest.

And then Claudia refocused the conversation to Marley’s allegations, asking him directly about the date that Marley had suggested. The suggestion that had resulted in Connor exiting Spellwork as quickly as possible. The suggestion that had resulted in Marley literally chasing after him and trying to barge into the bathroom with him in it, while he tried to hide from her. The suggestion that had resulted in him skipping classes and avoiding the Diner and essentially doing everything he could to not see Marley Chapman.

In retrospect, that was all quite humiliating and he saw no need to explain the details to Claudia. Or anyone.

“She did,” Connor said crisply, following it with “But of course, I immediately removed myself from the situation because it was highly inappropriate. Even with her communications...challenges, I can’t imagine that Marley would have thought I had answered in the affirmative.” All of a sudden, it dawned on him that Marley shouldn’t have asked him out anyway - because she had to have known that Connor was perfectly happy with his arrangement with Claudia. That was, unless Marley had been deliberately scheming the entire time to ruin the arrangement with Claudia in order to make him miserable. “Particularly as she knew that we had already established a more exclusive relationship,” Connor added.
