I was not prepared for This

Claudia was mortified. It felt like barely any time ago at all that she was inwardly judging Marley for making such a scene with her unrestrained, emotional hysteria, and yet here Claudia was, behaving in exactly the same irrational manner. Despite her best efforts, for several seconds she was capable of nothing but more crying, some unbecoming sobbing breaths, and feeling her cheeks heat up at an alarming rate. Connor’s sudden movement distracted her sufficiently that she was able to properly draw breath. She felt certain he was about to walk away, to not want to be associated with such an embarrassing spectacle, and she wouldn’t blame him at all if he did. Of course he was much more of a gentleman than she’d accredited him in her temporary state of insanity, and instead of abandoning her (as she might have done if their situations were reversed), he transfigured a tissue and offered it to her.

She took it, so very ashamed at all of her thoughts and actions that she believed for a moment she would just die in her dormitory, as reluctant as she was to ever leave it again once she finally could escape this Hell and be hidden away in her own private sanctuary. The thought of her silk eiderdown - wrapped snugly against her as she cocooned herself fully in it - soothed her. Also the breath she had managed to take when noticing Connor shift position seemed to have cleared her airways sufficiently that breathing normally was no longer presenting a problem. By the time she had wiped dry her eyes and face, and dabbed lightly at the end of her nose, Claudia was feeling much more in control of herself, but also much more foolish.

The Connor apologized.

Claudia stared at him. In this whole debacle, Connor was clearly (to Claudia, at least, now she was in possession of all the facts) the least guilty party of the them all (Admittedly Marley was coming off a little worse than Claudia herself, seeing as she had elected not to divulge her own secret-keeping, but that couldn’t be helped). Yet he was offering her a tissue, and an apology, and asking, in so many words, how he could help.

For just a moment, Claudia felt like crying all over again. She had always liked Connor - for as long as she’d known him, he had been polite, attentive, and interested in what she had to say - and so she had always been very amenable to spending time in his company, but she had not expected he would elicit from her any genuine affection. Always she had esteemed him, but in that moment, Claudia suspected she had never liked a person better. She shook her head in response to his apology, alerting him that it was not necessary. “Please forgive me,” she requested instead, her voice a little shaky but fit for purpose. He hadn’t been the one to allow his emotions to get the better of him, after all. “The only thing I would wish for either of us to do is to forget this day ever happened,” Claudia implored.

  • Oh no . There were, to be quite frank, not very many scenarios in life that Connor was particularly well-prepared for. The whole situation with Marley had definitely demonstrated that, if nothing... more
