When Connor agreed to pretend as those this whole nightmare had never occurred, Claudia sighed again in relief, and finally managed to compose herself to as close to normality as she could muster. Her face was still warm and damp, and her overwhelming emotion was of foolishness, but she was pleased that this debacle was almost over. She was also intrigued by her realisation that she didn’t mind being around Connor when she was feeling so vulnerable and pathetic.

When he suggested they dine on Pearl Street, she simply couldn’t believe that he would actually want to spend yet more time with her that day, given her behaviour in their very recent history. She would have loved nothing more than to accept his invitation… unfortunately she had already promised Marley the same meal. “It would be very welcome,” she said, longingly, “but Connor, I regret that I’ve already agreed to have dinner with Marley this evening.” She did indeed regret that she couldn’t go to Pearl Street with Connor, but she was no less invested in making absolutely sure that everything was going to be settled satisfactorily between herself and her best friend.

“I know you don’t understand it,” she said, “and I wish she didn’t cause you so many grievances, but I honestly do value Marley’s friendship,” she admitted. “I feel comfortable now, after we have endured this rather uncomfortable conversation, that you and I have affirmed our relationship,” she did her best to offer some sort of legitimate explanation for choosing to spend time with Marley over Connor, “I am eager to do the same with Marley so I can place today’s upset firmly in the past.” If she didn’t fully explain to Marley soon that she was continuing her relationship with Connor, and that Marley needed to not pursue him any longer, they were bound to quarrel again in the future.

“If you would be so extraordinarily considerate as to postpone until tomorrow, then I would be absolutely delighted to accept your proposal.” If she somehow managed to escape this episode being closer to Connor and to Marley, Claudia might even get over the unpleasantness of the fiasco without professional therapy.
